'I Became Unconscious', Akshay Kumar Recalls How A 1969 Vaishno Devi Trip Nearly Ended In Tragedy

Bollywood actor, Akshay Kumar is currently preparing for the release of his upcoming horror comedy film, Bhoot Bangla. The movie was initially set to hit theatres on April 10, 2026. However, the team decided to change the date to April 17, 2026, owing to the strong wave Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar 2 has created at the box office. Well, amid Bhoot Bangla's ongoing promotions, Akshay Kumar recently revealed a chilling anecdote about how his parents nearly lost him shortly after his birth.

Akshay Kumar recalls the time he fell unconscious as a child and how a seemingly divine experience saved him

Akshay Kumar recently sat down for a chat with HT City. Here, he said that his birth was the result of his parents' constant prayers at the revered Vaishno Devi Temple. Recounting the story, he said, "My mother and father prayed at Vaishno Devi, asking for a child. They specifically requested, 'Give us a child, but let him be naughty.’" According to the Bhoot Bangla actor, his parents' prayers were answered, and a year later, he was born.

Akshay Kumar added that his parents took him along to the Vaishno Devi Temple on a thanksgiving trip after his first birthday. However, it did not take long for the trip to turn into a frightening ordeal. Akshay revealed that when they were on their way, his health started deteriorating rapidly. He said:

“I had a high fever, first 103°F, then 104°F, and I became unconscious. The doctor in Katra advised them to take me to Delhi. This was in 1969, and there wasn’t proper medical care available in Katra at the time."

Though the situation was so alarming, it was not enough to shake Akshay's mother's faith. Instead of giving in to her fear, she said that if Mata Rani had given them their son, she could take him back if she so desired. However, no matter what happens, they won't turn back and will continue their journey to the temple. With a determined mind, Akshay's parents continued their uphill trek and kept chanting “Jai Mata Di” as they made their way to the shrine. Recalling the moment, Akshay said:

"They had dressed me in a red frock, which I still have, and I was unconscious. They bathed me inside the temple, offered prayers, and were crying as they prayed.”

Following this, Akshay suggested that they had a divine experience. He remembered how a stranger approached his father and said, “Your son has a beautiful smile.” And when his father turned towards him, baby Akshay was indeed smiling. Even his temperature has dropped from 103°F-104°F to 98°F. The actor said, “I was completely fine. I'm not sure which medicine they gave me, but there was something about the energy there that made me get better on my own.”
