The film, Wuthering Heights, which is loosely based on the centuries-old tragic love story, a novel written by Emily Bronte, revolves around 'Heathcliff' (played by Jacob Elordi) and 'Catherine Earnshaw' (played by Margot Robbie). The doomed romance of 'Catherine' and 'Heathcliff' involving jealousy, obsession, revenge and class divide is the heart of the film. The film will feature their reunion after they experienced a heartbreaking separation.
An ardent bookworm who is a fan of Emily Bronte’s 1847 novel, Wuthering Heights, might have some new experiences while watching the 2026 film. Speaking about the same, the film’s casting director told Deadline, there will be some sequences that some English Lit fans will not like about the new interpretation.
The film, Wuthering Heights, will definitely be a new experience for people who have not yet read the classic novel by Emily Bronte. According to TV journalist, Jonathan Sim, the 2026 film is an epic romantic tale which includes the director, Emerald Fennell’s beautiful vision. He wrote, "#WutheringHeights is an epic, yearning romance with a beautiful vision from Emerald Fennell. Breathtaking cinematography, production design, and score, with two incredible performances from Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Steamy, emotional, and captivating."
Another movie critic lauded the chemistry of Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie and penned, "Wuthering Heights first reactions are praising Margot Robbie and Jacob Eloridi's chemistry as 'a whole other level of hot' and calling the movie 'a rip-roaring, bodice-ripping crowd-pleaser.'" A critic shared a mixed review and penned, "#WutheringHeights - turn up for the top-shelf magazine gloss of Robbie and Elordi's tryst (both are...fine), but stay for Alison Oliver's film-stealing turn. Fennell's quotation mark adaptation of Bronte is undeniably beautiful, but it's also a frustratingly empty experience."
Another critic shared a mixed review and wrote, "To be clear, I have no real attachment to the source material beyond what I’ve seen in other adaptations, so Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights feels entirely singular, and you’ll either love her bold, colourful approach or not. The passion, desire, and heartbreak are as vivid and overwhelming as the striking design choices crafted by Fennell, cinematographer Linus Sandgren, production designer Suzie Davis, and costume designer Jacqueline Durran. Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi deliver emotional, steamy performances individually, but they’re even more compelling together, heightened by Anthony Willis’s score and Charli XCX’s songs, which deepen the film’s intoxicating atmosphere. It all comes together in an intense sensation of longing, ecstasy, and despair. Subtlety and nuance are not invited here. Messy and overlong as it may be, the romantic in me, who likes his emotions big, fell hard for it."
Alongside Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, the romantic drama also features Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, Shazad Latif, Martin Clunes, and Ewan Mitchell. The movie also stars, the Adolescene fame, Owen Cooper and Charlotte Mellington. According to multiple reports, Owen Cooper plays young 'Heathcliff', and Charlotte Mellington plays young 'Catherine'. The period drama is written and directed by filmmaker, Emerald Fennell.
