Pregnant Kajal Chaudhary was posted with the Special Cell's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit when she was allegedly brutally assaulted by her husband, Ankur Chaudhary.
A 24-year-old SWAT commando of the Delhi Police Special Cell was beaten to death while she was on a phone call with her brother. The officer, now identified as Kajal Chaudhary, was shifted to a private hospital in Ghaziabad, where she was declared brain dead. After five days of battling severe head injuries, she died on the morning of Wednesday, January 27, 2026. Her death has come as a shocking and disturbing case of domestic violence in the capital city.
Kajal was posted with the Special Cell's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit when she got brutally assaulted by her husband, Ankur Chaudhary. Reports say she had sustained severe head injuries after Ankur allegedly hit her with a metal dumbbell. Here's a breakdown of what's known so far about the horrific incident.
Kajal was originally from Ganaur, Haryana, and joined the Delhi Police in 2022. In her early days, she underwent rigorous training for her role as a commando and was selected for the Special Cell's elite SWAT unit. In case you didn't know, the SWAT is one of the most prestigious units equipped to handle high-risk situations beyond the capabilities of regular police officers.
Kajal was one of the 19 female commandos selected by Delhi Police Special Cell in 2023 as markswomen for Delhi's G20 summit. She had received four weeks of advanced training in counter-terrorism operations before the summit, and was known to be a highly capable officer. This is what makes Kajal's story even more heartrending, considering that even such a well-trained professional had to become a case of domestic violence-related fatality.
The incident reportedly occurred at the residence of Kajal and Ankur in West Delhi's Mohan Garden area. On the night of January 22, 2026, around 10:00 p.m., the couple got into an altercation that soon escalated to physical assault. According to police filings, Ankur, in a fit of rage, allegedly smashed Kajal’s head against a door frame and struck her repeatedly with a dumbbell. After she became unresponsive, Ankur himself took Kajal to a nearby hospital in Mohan Garden.
Kajal's brother, Nikhil, recounted the chilling phone call he had with his sister before the attack. Nikhil, also a Delhi Police constable, recalled how Kajal had called him that night during the argument to explain whatever was happening at home, when Ankur snatched the phone and threatened to kill her. Their toddler son was at Kajal's parents' house when she was attacked. In Nikhil's words:
“My sister took the phone and tried to explain what had happened. Chaudhary got offended by some remarks she made. He snatched the phone and asked me to record the conversation as evidence, saying he was going to kill my sister. I then heard her screaming before the call got disconnected."
Shortly after that haunting phone call, Nikhil allegedly received another call from Ankur. He claimed that he had killed his sister and asked him to reach Delhi to claim her body. She was only 24 at the time of her death. Some reports say she was pregnant with a second child. Nikhil recalled with HT:
“About five minutes later, Chaudhary called again and told me that he had killed my sister and that I should come to Delhi to claim her body. When I reached Delhi around midnight, his family had already arrived, and he had admitted my sister to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her brain dead."
What's more shocking about Officer Kajal's death is that she and her husband, Ankur, had a love marriage. According to Nikhil's account, Ankur was Kajal's college mate, and they met when the latter got into a college in Panipat for her graduation. Both of them eventually secured government jobs. While Kajal became part of the Delhi Police elite, Ankur joined the Ministry of Defence as a clerk. After dating for nearly four years, they tied the knot in November 2023 and later bought a flat in Vinod Nagar near Dwarka Mor. They were parents to a one-and-a-half-year-old son, who was at his maternal grandparents’ home at the time of the attack, as told by Nikhil to HT. Kajal's family has reportedly alleged that she was being harassed for some time over dowry demands, including money and a car.
Kajal was admitted to Tarak Hospital in a critical condition, and her husband was the immediate suspect. Nikhil says a senior officer was already aware of the situation, and immediately after getting a call from the hospital, the police registered an attempt to murder case against Ankur. He was arrested and later sent to judicial custody. The SWAT officer was declared brain dead on January 25 and was shifted to a private hospital in Ghaziabad's Nehru Nagar. However, the injuries proved fatal, and Kajal died on Tuesday morning around 6 a.m.
While the case against Ankur was initially filed as an attempt to murder, it has now been converted to murder, and further investigation is underway. After her death, special commissioner of police Madhup Tiwari, from law and order, zone-2, told the reporters:
“We registered a case of attempt to murder and arrested the commando’s husband, Ankur Chaudhary, the same night the crime was committed. He was produced before a Delhi court and sent to judicial custody. Now that the commando has died, the case has been converted from attempt to murder to murder."
As of now, Officer Kajal's murder case is under investigation, and authorities are trying to determine the full sequence of events. The dowry claims, loan repayment disputes, and roles of other family members remain under scrutiny.
