Arlene Smith was born on October 5, 1941, in the Bronx, New York. From a young age, she had developed a passion for music. In contrast to her counterparts, the singer got a formal classical training. At the same time, she used to sing in church choirs as a child. In fact, her talent was evident from the beginning when she performed at Carnegie Hall at the age of 12.
Arlene attended St. Anthony of Padua School in the Bronx, where she formed a singing group with her classmates Lois Harris, Sonia Goring, Jackie Landry, and Renée Minus. Eventually, they adapted the name The Chantels from a nearby school, St Frances de Chantal. Soon, their unique harmonies caught the attention of a record producer, Richard Barrett. Later, he helped them to start their professional music career in 1957.
Needless to say, The Chantels quickly became one of the first successful African American girl groups in rock 'n' roll history. The group first rose to fame with the release of Maybe. It was a heartfelt ballad co-written by Arlene. Soon, the song became a major hit driven by her emotional vocals. In fact, it sold a million copies.
The group also released additional songs such as Every Night and Look In My Eyes, but none matched the success of Maybe. Later, Arlene left the Chantels in 1959 after the group's record label went bankrupt. She continued to work for a while before moving beyond mainstream music.
After Arlene Smith's professional music career slowed down, she chose a different path in life. She went ahead to pursue a master's degree in education. In fact, she spent many years working as an elementary school music teacher in New York City.
Therefore, being a teacher enabled her to share her love of music with the young generation of students. Meanwhile, Arlene retired in the 2000s. According to her longtime manager and close friend, Paul Errante, she never got married. At the same time, she had no children. In contrast, Arlene lived a quiet and independent life away from the media spotlight.
After she retired from teaching, Arlene continued to preserve The Chantels' legacy. She used to do interviews and projects that showcased the history of their girl group. Eventually, her influence led to The Chantels' induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.
Arlene Smith's death was confirmed by her manager and close friend, Paul Errante. He told the media that she died after a heart attack at a New York City Hospital at 84.
