Rick Springfield first met his future wife, Barbara Porter, at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles in the 70s while he was recording an album there. Porter was working as a receptionist at the studio at that time.
Back in 2021, Springfield recalled in an interview that his English manager had brought Barbara in to introduce her to everyone. He noted that she was only 15 then and reminded him of a young Brigitte Bardot, but he felt she was too young and only thought she was cute at the time. They reconnected when he returned to Sound City to record Working Class Dog.

The duo tied the knot in Australia in October 1984 and have remained each other's constant support since. The duo later welcomed two children, Liam and Joshua. Both of Rick and Barbara’s children have pursued careers in different fields. Joshua is studying to become a child therapist, while Liam is establishing himself as an actor, as stated in a report by PEOPLE in 2025.
Back in 2025, Rick Springfield shared what has kept his marriage going strong for four decades. Rick said in an interview with PEOPLE that he and Barbara Porter live by a simple guiding rule to treat arguments as meaningless. He explained that when he and Barbara start arguing, they often stop and laugh because they recognize the pattern and know it does not mean anything.
Rick shared that most of their disagreements are about things they both love, like their dog or their kids, and that they always reconcile. He added that during difficult periods they have sought a third person to talk to, which he believes is important, and when asked how they have stayed married, his answer is simply to not get divorced.
Springfield also credited Porter with changing the course of his career, saying that nothing was happening professionally until he got together with her. He recalled being closed off, stressed about having no money or success and being alone in America away from his family, and noted that after meeting her none of that seemed to matter anymore. Even though he still had no money and had not achieved anything career-wise at the time, he said having someone by his side on the journey made all the difference.
Over the years, Rick Springfield said both he and Porter have taken turns being the anchor in the relationship. He described how she has been his rock, and he has been hers, with the roles shifting over time. While he acknowledged that Barbara has been the core of their relationship without question, he added that as they get older, they both have moments of going overboard and rely on the other to throw a lifeline and pull them back.
