She fell in love with Chad Michael Murray during the early days of the series, both on-screen and off-screen. While Sophia has rarely discussed that part of her life, she is finally opening up about that time and the end of her marriage to Chad.

Sophia Bush is opening up about her relationship with Chad Michael Murray, which began in 2003. In her memoir All I Will Tell You Mine, Sophia claims that Murray began paying closer attention to her after she arrived in Wilmington, N.C., in July 2003, where the show One Tree Hill was filmed for nine seasons. At the time, Murray opened up to the actress about his childhood and personal struggles. This led Sophia’s “nurturer gene” to activate.
The former couple took things slow, with their co-star Hilarie Burton even warning Sophia not to date him. However, despite trusting Hilarie, Sophia felt that Murray was not the type of man that she was describing. When Sophia confronted Murray, he admitted that he was “embarrassed” by his past choices while assuring her that she “made him want to be better.”
In her memoir, Sophia Bush went on to reveal that she was drawn to Chad Michael Murray’s sensitive side, but after that she had to allegedly deal with “the insecurity, the possessiveness, and the controlling demands.” This led to them having more frequent arguments.
Sophia recalled how rumors of infidelity involving Murray surfaced, but she defended him through it all. It was after they got engaged in Australia that cheating rumors surfaced on set. While the actress initially returned the ring to Murray, they succeeded in working things out in a therapist’s office.
On the night before their wedding, one of Sophia Bush’s college friends asked her if she was sure about tying the knot with Murray. But the Work in Progress podcast host was not going to give up and was determined to make her relationship work. Her resolve started faltering just two days after they married, when Murray asked Sophia to “sit out” her 23rd birthday. She claimed that she couldn't do another fight or humiliating show of him making his territory with her co-workers.
Despite questioning if things were working, Sophia Bush still wanted to try. However, she could not stop thinking about how one of Murray's friends did not show up to be a groomsman at their wedding due to a mysterious illness. When Sophia confronted him, that's when he confessed to her that Murray had been seeing other women while they were together.
In fact, when Sophia and Murray met in North Carolina, the woman that the actor had been dating was living in his house in L.A. According to Sophie, in the aftermath of their breakup, the infidelity was her “cross to bear.” Meanwhile, Murray was allegedly engaged to a local high school student. While speaking with PEOPLE, Sophia said:
“It’s the thing I never want to speak about because do you want to talk about the dumb thing you did when you were a senior in college, which is how old I was?”
Now, years later, Sophia admitted that it doesn't even feel like her life anymore. She said that she is a very different person, and so is Chad Michael Murray.
