Charlie, the founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University. His death at age 31 left Erika raising their two young children and eventually stepping into a leadership role at the organization he founded.
Throughout the year, Charlie's widow has often shared glimpses into how she navigated grief while trying to explain to her children why their father wasn't coming back. On Thursday, shortly after posting the photo, Erika shared another Instagram story, posting a photo of herself walking with her two children. She thanked the people who have supported her family since Charlie's death, writing:
"To every person who has loved us, prayed for us, and carried our children and me before the Lord, not only today, but every day this past year...from the deepest place in my heart, thank you."
She continued by reflecting on the role faith has played in helping her through the loss. Erika wrote, "God, in His mercy, has used so many of you to steady us through the unimaginable. I will never have the words to adequately express what your prayers and love have meant to our family."
She ended the message with a personal tribute to her husband: "My Charlie... our babies and myself love you with everything we have. We will carry you with us in our hearts forever and we thank God for every day He gave us with you. Thank you for being the love of my life."
The posts soon went viral online, with well-wishers sending messages of sympathy and prayers. Meanwhile, some critics used the anniversary post to sharpen their attacks on Erika, echoing the bitter political battles surrounding Charlie’s death and legacy.
The past year has brought Erika into a new public role while she continues to grieve privately. In a recent essay published by The New York Times, she described learning to navigate ordinary family moments without her husband and recalled advice from Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President JD Vance, to focus on getting through grief 15 minutes at a time. Erika said:
"I am still learning how to walk through each day carrying the grief I feel for my Charlie. Some days I have a vague understanding of God's plan; others I don't, but I trust Him completely."

The Utah campus, the very place where Charlie was gunned down in broad daylight exactly a year ago, marked his anniversary with Turning Point USA. The organization hosted “Freedom Built to Last: Honoring Charlie Kirk” at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2026, with people remembering his life and legacy.
Students, friends, and TPUSA supporters gathered for the memorial, with speakers focusing heavily on Charlie's Christian faith and his influence on young conservatives. A statue depicting Kirk seated in a folding chair was also unveiled during the event. The memorial came amid heightened security on campus and renewed attention surrounding the case against the man accused of killing Kirk.
Tyler Robinson, the man accused of killing Charlie, was handed over to the police by his own father after he allegedly admitted to the crime. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and a Utah judge ruled earlier this month that the aggravated-murder case can proceed to trial. Robinson may even get a death penalty if convicted.
