The actor was known for his work in Friends, and the show was pivotal to his career. However, did you know that when the reunion took place, he was at the lowest point in his life?
Friends reunion came at the lowest point in Matthew Perry's life
Matthew Perry's death came as a massive shock to everyone. The actor died in 2023, following a lengthy battle with addiction, and now, three years later, Netflix has released a three-part docuseries that introduces fans to different aspects of the actor's life. Produced by Maxine Production, the series features Perry's sister, Maria 'Mia' Perry Bowick; his friends Roger Castillo, David Pressman, and Kevin Pollak; as well as numerous colleagues, exes, and other friends.

While the docuseries gives fans insight into the actor's life beyond Friends, the docuseries also acknowledges its pivotal role in his life. Taking fans behind the scenes of the cult classic sitcom, it revealed how the reunion came at one of the lowest points in Matthew Perry's life. As many might know, Perry faced a near-death experience in 2018 that left him in a coma with a 2 percent chance of survival after a colon rupture.
While he survived, the actor claimed the ordeal aged him 20 years in just three months. Matthew Perry was deeply affected by the incident and allegedly at the lowest point in his life when the Friends reunion came around. The actor's sister Mia Bowick recalled how Perry was focused on getting sober and struggling when the reunion was being planned, adding immense pressure on her brother. She was quoted as saying:
"I do remember around the time of the 'Friends' reunion, Matthew being focused on being sober, struggling with sobriety, knowing the importance of this … long-awaited (reunion), right, a lot of pressure."
Mia Bowick recalled Matthew Perry was diminished following the bodily traumas. The writer/producer of Friends, Jeff Strauss, also reflected on the time and revealed that Perry "behaviorally announced" what he had been through. Meanwhile, Kevin Pollak admitted Perry struggled in the special, saying "it's tough to watch, because he's just not himself."
On the other hand, David Pressman declined to speak about the special. While his friends recalled how difficult it was to see the critical comments come in after the special aired, Mia Bowick said Perry felt "relieved." For those who are not aware, Matthew Perry struggled for a long time with his addiction, and even spent about USD 7 million trying to get sober.
Matthew Perry's Friends co-stars held hands and cried around his casket
Matthew Perry joined the cast of Friends as 'Chandler Bing', alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. He appeared in all 236 episodes across the sitcom's 10 seasons. Having spent a decade with the team, it was obvious that he had formed a close bond with all of his co-stars, which made his passing even more heartbreaking for the entire cast.

Reflecting on Matthew Perry's private funeral, his sister, Mia Bowick, recalled how Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer attended the funeral, held hands, and cried around his casket. Bowick described the funeral as small, with "close friends and family only," and said the rest of the Friends cast "all walked in together" and hugged her, though Jennifer Aniston gave the first hug. She said:
"And then all five of them walked up to the casket holding hands and stood around him crying."
