After leaving the White House, Malia and Sasha completed their college. Now, they are pursuing their individual career beyond their famous family name.
Former U.S President, Barack Obama and former First Lady, Michelle Obama recently made a rare public appearance. They came together for the opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Centre Museum in Chicago. However, a highlight of the event was the presence of the couple's daughters, Maliaam and Sasha Obama. They both have mainly kept their lives away from politics. Previously known as America's first daughters, Malia and Sasha spent much of their childhood in the White House. But now they are confidently forging their own identities apart from their famous last name.
Barack and Michelle Obama's elder daughter, Malia, has quietly made her name in the entertainment industry. She graduated from Harvard University in 2021. In turn, she began working behind the scenes in the film and TV industry. Malia earned a writing credit on a Donald Glover series and later made her directorial debut with the short film, The Heart. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024. Interestingly, she chose to credit the project under the name "Malia Ann" rather than using the Obama surname.
Later, Barack Obama admitted that he respected his daughter's decision. He explained that Malia wanted audiences to judge her work on its merit rather than through her family's political legacy. On the other hand, Sasha Obama has kept a more private profile. She initially attended the University of Michigan, but later transferred to the University of Southern California. She completed her education in sociology. In comparison to her sister, Sasha lives a more private life. Yet, insiders describe her as a confident, outspoken and independent person.
Barack Obama once joked that Sasha is the comedian of the family. In fact, anyone's status or credentials never intimidated her. After completing her education, Sasha has settled in Los Angeles, and she continues to live with her sister. The living arrangement has allowed them to maintain a close bond after they grew up in intense public attention. Sharing updates on their daughters, Michelle once said on The Late Late Show:
"They still have PTSD from guys talking into their wrist microphones and glasses as they're trying to go to a music concert."
The Obama sisters are once again in the news after they made a recent public appearance with their parents. The family came together for the opening of the Obama Presidential Centre in Chicago. It was one of the few occasions in recent years when the entire family was seen together in public. According to observers, both women appeared comfortable and confident.
In fact, their appearance showed how far they had come after their years in the White House. Usually, the children of political figures pursue careers connected to public life, but Malia and Sasha have avoided using their last name.
Barack and Michelle Obama have remained active after their years in politics through their media company, Higher Ground Productions. It makes films, documentaries and podcasts. The couple had also put in a significant amount of time and effort into building the Obama Presidential Centre. For those unaware, it is a major civic and educational project made to promote leadership, public service and community engagement.
At the same time, Michelle continues to speak up for education, health and women's empowerment. Meanwhile, Barack is focused on civic initiatives and democracy-focused programs. Despite their global fame, the couple has frequently mentioned how proud they are to see their daughtersdaughters grow into independent adults and achieve their own goals.
