For the unversed, Zach Cregger is famous for his films such as Barbarian and Weapons and is now trying his hand at an extremely dark horror. Now, with months left for the release, the director has reflected on what went down behind the scenes and revealed how a scene almost cost Austin Abrams his life.
As Resident Evil fans brace for a new big-screen take on the video game, the film's director has recalled an incident that almost cost his star Austin Abrams his life. Zach Cregger appeared for a Q&A and answered some of the top questions. During the interaction, he recalled a practical stunt that nearly took a deadly turn. Zach revealed that he was shooting a zombie sequence where Austin was being chased by the creatures.
However, things took a turn when Zach shared that he didn't want to use VFX for the bloodshed and bodies that were falling and detonating around him. According to a report by SlashFilm, Zach was looking for an idea to make the explosion real as he felt using VFX would not provide the same results. He said:
"It's in the trailer momentarily, but [Abrams is] running down the street, and there are zombies on the roof of the buildings on either side, and they're all leaping at him. And so, we had to basically design this thing where he's just running, and bodies are just falling and detonating all around him. And I knew I didn't want to do it with VFX because I feel like it would just look like VFX. So, I was like, 'How do we do this where all these explosions are real?'"
Zach further revealed that the solution eventually came in the form of 150 lb blood bags. However, what they didn't think about was that it would become one of the most dangerous stunts in the film. The scene ultimately called for heavily rehearsed and precise choreography as Austin navigated an obstacle course of 150 lb "body-sized blood bags" falling from cranes around him.
Nonetheless, despite the precautions, Zach revealed that the actor came too close to being crushed by one of the 150 lb blood bags. He shared how if Austin was even one step to the right, he would have died. However, Zach still called the risk worth it and said:
"It would've killed him. If he had been one step to the right, he would've died. [The shot is] in the movie, so it's f*cking worth it. I was pretty stunned....That's what's so great about making movies is you have this scene, you have this amazing idea in your head, and then you just have all these people help you realize that idea and immortalize it on the screen."
In the same conversation, Zach Cregger admitted that he was extremely proud of the film they had created. He said, "There's a real sense of teamwork and accomplishment. I'm very proud of this movie. I feel like I grew a lot making it, just as a filmmaker." Talking about the film, Austin Abrams essays the role of medical courier 'Bryan', who has to fight for survival when a sudden outbreak occurs while he's making a delivery. The film is co-written with Shay Hatten, with the cast including Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser and Johnno Wilson.
