MS Subbulakshmi, aka Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi, was an Indian Carnatic singer. She was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, and also the first Indian musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1974. While she rose to the top with her skills, her personal life often remained hidden from the world.
MS Subbulakshmi was married to Thiagaraja Sadasivam, who was widely known as Kalki Sadasivam. He was a freedom fighter, journalist, singer, film producer, and co-founder of the Tamil magazine Kalki. However, MS Subbulakshmi was not his first wife. Yes, he married the Carnatic singer on July 10, 1940, after the death of his first wife, Abithakuchambal.
MS Subbulakshmi and Kalki Sadasivam's relationship was not just that of a husband and wife. In their 57 years together, he managed her career, shaped her public image, and guided her musical journey until his death on November 22, 1997. The couple didn't have any children of their own. However, MS Subbulakshmi took on the role of a loving mother to Kalki's daughters, Radha Vishwanathan and Vijaya, from his first marriage.
Radha even accompanied MS Subbulakshmi as a backup singer for her performances and later became a popular name in the music world herself. Kalki Sadasivam was 95 years old when he passed away. The freedom fighter took his last breath in Chennai after battling pneumonia for a while. Kalki's final rites were carried out in Chennai by his adopted son, S Thyagarajan.
The biopic on legendary Carnatic singer MS Subbulakshmi was recently announced. The film will see Rashmika Mandanna essaying the lead role. The film has been titled MS - A Legacy On Screen and will follow the life story of the legendary singer. Amid the buzz, the filmmakers and Rashmika met the late singer's family and shared a video on X (formerly Twitter).
In the video, Rashmika was seen wearing a saree and heavy jewellery. She was also seen greeting the family. The video has since gone viral on social media. Fans are eager to see Rashmika in the role of MS Subbulakshmi. Geetha Arts, one of the production houses backing the project, shared the video and wrote:
"A beautiful moment before the beginning of M.S. A Legacy On Screen. Team #MSBiopic meets the family of #MSSubbulakshmi Amma with love, respect, and heartfelt gratitude, thanking them for their unconditional support."
Talking about the film, Gowtam Tinnanuri will direct the biopic, while Anirudh Ravichander will compose the music. Geetha Arts, Rockline Entertainment, and Bunny Vas Works will jointly produce the film. According to Gulte, several actresses, including Sai Pallavi and Rukmini Vasanth, were considered for the role before the makers finalised Rashmika Mandanna.
MS Subbulakshmi needs no introduction. Born in Madurai on September 16, 1916, MS Subbulakshmi became one of the most celebrated Carnatic vocalists of the 20th century. She came from a family of traditional performing artists and left a lasting mark on Indian classical music. While her journey was magnificent, it was definitely not easy, and the biopic is said to give fans a glimpse into just that.
