While he has been married three times, all of which ended in divorces, Phil has not given up on the idea of love and relationships. In the recent interview, he made some emotional revelations, including the time his five children came to say 'goodbye' to their dad when he was hospitalized with issues related to his alcohol use. Earlier than that, Phil admitted during an interview with the BBC that he had been drinking too much.
Phil stopped doing so. Amid his recent revelations, let's look back at a time when Phil's first wife, Andrea Collins, talked about their split and the main reason behind it. Phil Collins had been married to Andrea Bertorelli for five years.
After his split, the music icon got married twice to Jill Tavelman and Orianne Cevey. However, all three of his marriages ended in divorce, just like his first marriage. Speaking to Woman&Home, Andrea revealed her and Phil's love story along with the reason for their split. According to Andrea, she and Phil met when they were 11 years old.
The couple then started dating three years later when they were 14. Andrea and Phil then broke up as the former had to move somewhere else as her mother remarried after her dad's passing. She was dating someone else and welcomed a daughter with him. Andrea and Phil then reconciled when she joined Genesis. The duo was 24 years old when they got married in 1975.
Phil eventually became overly ambitious in his career, and Andrea was pregnant with their child back then. While she was already dealing with it, Phil broke the news that he was leaving for work when she was about to deliver their son, which left her anxious. The distance between them grew, and Andrea said she often felt alone, which became even more intense when her husband would snap at her for small reasons during his visits between tours.
During that time, Andrea and Phil's home was being renovated, and she got to talking to a guy who was helping her with the work. According to Andrea, it eventually turned out to be an affair, mostly an emotional infidelity rather than a physical one. She told everything to Phil, and they tried to sort things out. However, Andrea said that Phil's attitude towards her remained the same, and she eventually realized that she couldn't stay with him. According to her:
"Phil and I stayed together after I ended the affair, but he was still touring and short-tempered with me when we saw one another. I decided to take a break to see my mum in Vancouver to get some space and while I was there, I realised I couldn't stay with him. When I returned home, I asked for a divorce."
Phil Collins' hit solo track, In the Air Tonight, he talked about feeling betrayed as his partner ran off with a decorator and painter. Andrea felt 'sick' about the same, as she got to know that she was the subject of the same song and the matter being something of a public event. Andrea felt hurt, and she asked Phil to stop writing about her, but according to him, he had the artistic license to write whatever he wanted to. She also made a shocking claim, stating that Phil also cheated on her, and this information never came out in public. She said:
" It never really came out that he'd cheated on me, too, and our divorce was granted on the grounds of his adultery, rather than mine. I asked him to stop talking about me and writing songs about our relationship, he told me he had the artistic licence to write about whatever he wanted."
