Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleVeteran singer and drummer Phil Collins has found himself in the headlines after opening up about his personal life. Those who have been following him for a long time might be aware that he hasn't always been lucky in love, having divorced thrice. After his separation from his third wife, Orianne Cevey, Phil claimed that he is open to finding love once again at the age of 75. Amid this, Phil’s statements about how he regretted ending his marriage with his second wife, Jill Tavelman, have resurfaced.
Phil Collins tied the knot with a school teacher named Jill Tavelman back in 1984 after he met her a few years earlier, in 1981. Their marriage lasted for 12 years until it crumbled in the 1990s after Phil was caught having an affair. Eventually, his infidelity caused the couple to divorce in 1996, seven years after their daughter, actress Lily Collins, was born.
Phil Collins has admitted that he regrets the way that his marriage to Jill came to an end. He also insisted that he was wrong to cheat on her. Phil has reflected on his troubled personal life in his memoir, Not Dead Yet. Later, during an interview with Australia’s Sunday Night Show, he confessed that he treated his second wife horribly at the end of their relationship. For those unaware, Phil reportedly ended their relationship via a fax message. In his defence, Phil said:
“I was following my heart. But it turned out I was being a bit of a bastard.”
Phil also opened up about how sad he was because of his divorces, because, according to him, he is a real romantic at heart. He clarified that just because he had been married and divorced so many times did not mean that he had a casual attitude towards the idea of marriage. He said:
“I am disappointed I’ve been married three times. I’m even more disappointed that I’ve been divorced three times. While three divorces might seem to suggest a casual attitude towards the whole idea of marriage, this couldn’t be further from the truth.”
Phil claimed that he believes marriage is something to cherish and last. Just the fact that he got divorced three times means that he failed at understanding his partners. He said:
“I’m a romantic who believes, hopes, that the union of marriage is something to cherish and last. Yet certainly that trio of divorces demonstrates a failure to co-exist happily and to understand my partners. It suggests a failure to become and stay a family. It shows failure, full stop.”
Phil Collins’ three divorces had a great effect on his life and music career. In fact, the singer reportedly fell into addiction and underwent health difficulties because of the emotional toll they had on him. However, his unfavourable experiences with marriage have not stopped Phil from expressing that he wishes to fall in love again at the age of 75.
If he were to find a girlfriend, Phil said that he would be all romantic with her. He shared that he would kiss her and be willing to do all the things that couples usually do. In his words, "I'd love to be in love again. I would love a relationship. Kissing somebody, for example. You know, pretty basic stuff."
