According to the op-ed, Lena Dunham welcomed her first child with her husband, Luis Felber, at the age of 40. It also revealed that their daughter was born via a surrogate.
In the op-ed, Lena Dunham detailed her journey to motherhood. Noting how she felt when she first laid eyes upon her daughter, Lena wrote:
“Like a kid who wasn’t sure if their schoolmates would arrive for the birthday party, I was bashful and dizzy with joy. She seemed to fix her gaze on me.”
After the joyous news was revealed, the outlet shared the first photo of Lena Dunham’s daughter on September 16, 2026, on Instagram. In the picture, the actress appeared all smiles as she held her little one in her arms. Meanwhile, Lena’s husband, Luis, carried their dog in his right arm and kissed the top of Lena’s head. A second photo showed a hospital band wrapped around their daughter's hand that read, “Baby Lena.”
Lena stated that her daughter was preparing herself inside their surrogate’s strong and healthy body. However, she admitted that her desire to become a mother had not fully prepared her for the reality. She wrote:
“But she was preparing herself, inside our surrogate’s strong and healthy body, and as the clothes stacked up in the box, so did some sense that she was becoming real. These would be her clothes. She would be a person that we helped to dress, who made an impression on the world based on our choices, until she was old enough to do it herself.”
Lena Dunham revealed that their baby was born 13 days after her due date. She recounted that when they were at the hospital, she was uber focused on the surrogate and simply in awe of her. In fact, she completely forgot to look down at her daughter until she heard the baby’s cry.
For those unaware, Lena has spoken in the past about how her journey to parenthood could look a bit different from what she expected. This is because she has to undergo a hysterectomy due to the intense pain from her endometriosis. She said that as someone who has always envisioned becoming a mom, she grieved after going through with the surgery.
Later, when she met people who built their families in different ways, Lena felt excited to see how she could become a mother. She added that no matter which way it happens, she will feel truly grateful.
While Lena Dunham welcomed her first child at the age of 40, she spoke about her desire to adopt before turning 36. In an interview, she said, “I'll be 36 this year. I don't feel like turning 38 without a child.”
Lena said that she was surprised when a doctor told her that there was a chance of harvesting eggs with her remaining ovary after her surgery. However, she soon learned that none of her eggs were viable. This is when she made peace with becoming an adoptive mother. She shared:
"I decided I am not going to let myself mourn a set of children that weren't ever mine to begin with. Whether it's adoption or foster-to-adopt, I love the idea of becoming a mother in the way that's right for me, and I'm committed to it."
