While the actors announced their split on September 15, 2026, they claimed that they had been apart for a while before this. Amanda and Thomas also noted that they think their separation is the right move for them and their family.
For those unaware, before tying the knot with Thomas, Amanda had dated Justin Long. At one point, fans even wondered if the duo was secretly engaged.
What caused Amanda Seyfried and Justin Long’s split?
Amanda and Justin Long dated for over two years. The duo first met through mutual friends in the summer of 2013. Later, when she came across his Instagram account, the actress found his content hilarious. Recalling the time, Amanda said:
"I thought something he said was really funny. It was a beautiful picture of a snail, and the caption said, 'Fucking MOOOOOOOOVE.' It made me laugh out loud, so I texted him."
According to Amanda, she enjoyed her relationship with Justin because she felt like she could freely be herself with him. She admitted during an interview:
“I really do have my own identity, both inside and outside the relationship, if that makes any sense. It just feels right. It's also really good to feel okay being alone.”
While everything seemed to be going well in Amanda and Justin’s relationship from the outside, the pair soon broke up after two years of dating. At the time, a source for a leading publication revealed that Amanda and Justin were breaking up over relationship expectations. The source added, "He wanted to get married; she wasn't ready to make the commitment."
In fact, they alleged that Amanda might have already been ready to move on to someone new. The insider revealed that Amanda and Justin had different schedules and different lives, and they just grew apart. The actress has confessed that making movies that require two whole months of 12- to 14-hour days can easily ruin a relationship.
It is worth mentioning that before their breakup, Amanda and Justin had sparked engagement rumors. The speculations began when Amanda was spotted sporting a sizable diamond ring while she was out on a walk with her dog in New York City. After she spotted the photographers taking her pictures, the actress seemingly held back her laugh.
What left fans more surprised about the comment that Amanda did not want to commit to Justin Long was that she revealed her desire to settle down while she was still in a relationship with him. She admitted that she wanted to have kids and wanted them to go to the local schools. She was quoted as saying:
"I want to have kids. And I want them to go to local schools, and there are some really good schools around here. I would like my life to be the same as it is now, but with a little less stress and a little less work."
Previously, during an appearance on the Today show, Justin Long claimed that he and Amanda were “in it for the long haul.” So, when their breakup happened, Justin was left “really heartbroken.”
