Kouri Richins' sons want no association with her after being proven guilty of killing her husband, Eric Richins. Their fear reportedly inspired her life imprisonment sentence without parole.
The Grief Author Murder Trial, documenting the real-life trial of Utah-based children's book author Kouri Richins, has become one of the most closely watched trials on Court TV, and the internet has labelled her a 'black widow.'
The Utah mother of three and children’s book author, who once publicly spoke about grief and healing, was sentenced to life in prison without parole after being found guilty of murdering her husband with a fentanyl-laced cocktail. But it was the emotional statements from her children that became one of the most devastating moments of the entire case.
When Eric Richins was killed in 2022, all three sons he shared with Kouri Richins were reportedly under the age of 10. Today, they are nearing their teenage years, and they are still deeply scarred by the heinous end of their dad, whom they idolised and with whom they had a close bond. One of the most heartbreaking moments in the trial came during Kouri Richins sentencing hearing in the May 13 session.
All three boys submitted heartbreaking victim impact statements, asking the judge to impose the harshest punishment possible for their killer mother. According to sentencing memos filed by prosecutors, they expressed fear over the possibility of their mother ever being released from prison. Kouri’s eldest son, identified in court documents as C.R., reportedly told the judge that he feared for his safety if she ever got out. He said:
"I'm afraid if she gets out, she will come after me and my brothers, my whole family. I think she would come and take us and not do good things to us, like hurt us."
The other two boys also expressed a similar fear. The youngest son, W.R., expressed his fear, saying, "If she got out, I would be scared." The middle child, identified as A.R., also made it clear that he did not want his mother freed. He stated:
"I don't want [my mother] out of jail because I will not feel safe if [she is] out. With [her] in jail, I will be able to continue to feel safe and live a happy and successful life without fear of [her] hurting me or anyone I love."
After Kouri’s arrest in May 2023, custody of the boys was transferred to Eric’s family. Later court updates confirmed that the children have continued living with their late father’s relatives, who officially received custody rights in 2024 while Kouri remained in prison.
During her sentencing on May 13, 2026, Kouri addressed her sons directly in court, as she kept insisting that she was innocent despite the guilty verdict. While she previously did not testify during her trial, she decided to speak out this time. She did not react and rather was captured rolling her eyes and smirking when Eric Richins' sister, Katie Richins-Benson, gave her statement.
However, Kouri's demeanour changed completely when she stood up to speak to her sons. At the recent hearing, the children's book author spoke for about 30 minutes, during which she mainly addressed the boys. Visibly emotional, the convicted killer said:
"I know today you don’t want to speak to me, and you hate me. That’s OK. When you are ready, I will be here for you... I can’t believe that this is real... Accused and now convicted of such a heinous crime. Convicted of never seeing you boys again... As much as you’ve been influenced into thinking that...I took your dad from you... That is an absolute lie... I still and will always love you, and I’m asking that you please just don’t give up on me."
While Kouri insisted she would eventually come home and "never quit fighting my way home to you boys," her kids' statements reportedly played a key role in ensuring that she never made it out. Judge Richard Mrazik ultimately sided with prosecutors and imposed life without parole, saying Richins was "too dangerous to ever be free."
While it’s hard to imagine the emotional toll the entire ordeal has taken on the Richins brothers, Eric's family hopes to help them slowly rebuild a sense of peace and happiness.
