Peggy Flanagan And Tim Hellendrung Remained Friends After Divorce
When Flanagan publicly addressed her divorce, she made it clear that ending their marriage did not mean ending their relationship as parents. In a statement shared on Facebook, she wrote that she and Hellendrung had gone through a "difficult process of divorce" but remained friends and had a deep commitment to co-parenting their daughter.
Both Flanagan and Hellendrung's focus remained on ensuring that Siobhan continued to have the support of both parents despite their separation. The arrangement has allowed Hellendrung to remain part of his daughter's life while Flanagan moved forward with her own personal and political journey. Flanagan wrote in her 2018 Facebook post:
"Last year I went through the difficult process of divorce. I haven't shared this news widely. What's important to know is that my ex-husband and I have a deep commitment to co-parenting our beautiful daughter and remain friends."
When Did Peggy Flanagan Start Dating Tom Weber?
A year after her divorce, Peggy Flanagan began a relationship with journalist and radio host Tom Weber in 2018. When the couple met, Weber was a well-known Minnesota journalist and radio host at Minnesota Public Radio, and he hosted his popular morning show, MPR News With Tom Weber.
Their relationship quickly became a matter of professional concern because Flanagan was a state representative preparing to launch her campaign for lieutenant governor. Flanagan informed her campaign team about the relationship, while Weber disclosed the romance to MPR. The situation ultimately had major consequences for Weber's journalism career.
When Weber's relationship with Peggy Flanagan became public in 2018, it created an obvious conflict-of-interest concern because of her political career. Weber informed MPR management that he was romantically involved with Flanagan, who was then a Minnesota state representative preparing to run for lieutenant governor.
Given Flanagan's political status, the radio station subsequently reassigned Weber from his popular morning show, MPR News With Tom Weber. They also prevented him from covering the governor's race, the Minnesota Legislature and public policy, and all areas where his relationship with a political candidate could create questions about journalistic independence.
Flanagan herself addressed their relationship through her Facebook post, writing, "Recently, I began a romantic relationship with journalist Tom Weber. I let my campaign team know about our relationship. Tom informed MPR, pursuant to their laudable guidelines of conflict of interest."
Although Weber initially kept working after the role shift, he ultimately left MPR in June 2018, bringing his decade-long career at the station to an end. His departure came only months after his and Flanagan's relationship became known.
The couple's relationship continued despite the upheaval surrounding Weber's career. Weber proposed to Flanagan in June 2019 after dinner in downtown St. Paul, and just three months later, they married at a friend's cottage overlooking Lake Pepin in Red Wing, Minnesota.
So, how does Tim Hellendrung fit into Peggy Flanagan and Tom Weber's family? While Hellendrung's role today is primarily that of Siobhan's father, Weber, too, has turned out to be an amazing stepdad.
