Jelly Roll lost nearly 300 lbs in three years. The country singer was alarmed by his shocking test results and underwent a complete transformation.
Jelly Roll is currently leading the headlines for his divorce from Bunnie Xo after ten years of marital bliss. The couple has often been the centre of attention for their tiff and fallouts. But in May 2026, Jelly filed for divorce from Bunnie. After news of their divorce surfaced, people claimed that Jelly was the reason for the split, citing the fact that now that he has achieved his dream body and is moving on to new endeavours, he no longer needs her. Amid the debate over Jelly's transformation as the reason for his split, let us look at the country singer’s weight-loss journey.
Jelly Roll, whose birth name is Jason Bradley DeFord, has been struggling with weight since his birth. In 2022, he shared on The Bobby Bones Show that his mother gave him the nickname Jelly Roll because he was a “chubby kid.” Jelly always wanted to focus on his health and come out of being overweight.
But when his blood test results came out, it was alarming for him. After the first couple of tests, he wondered how he was even alive. In an interview with Men’s Health, Jelly revealed that his insulin levels were "super high," his testosterone was so low that is was similar to that "of a preteen boy”. His cholesterol was very high, and so were his A1C levels. His main goal was to see what was happening to him.
For a man who has been obese throughout his childhood, shedding weight was a major challenge, and Jelly was ready to take the challenge. He began his weight loss journey in 2022. He changed his lifestyle, prioritised exercise, made healthier food choices and lost between 60 and 70 lbs. Changing the way he eats has also had a huge impact on Jelly’s weight loss journey as he started consuming a high-protein diet. The singer stated that he was ‘imprisoned in a fat suit for 30-something years’ and when he started losing weight, he felt confident.
Jelly Roll has advocated losing weight naturally rather than using weight-loss drugs like Ozempic. During his appearance on the Dumb Blonde podcast, Jelly shared that he was not against using Ozempic, but had the fear of getting acid reflux, which was a potential side effect of the weight-loss injectable. The reason behind Jelly’s fear of acid reflux was that it can irritate the vocal cords.
Jelly Roll revealed that he struggled with food addiction and had to change the way he looked at food. The singer revealed that his addiction to food began when he was a kid and confessed that no one in his house shared a healthy relationship with food. So, for Jelly, getting into the discipline of eating was important. He wanted to have a normal relationship with food and sought therapy for overeating.
When Jelly started his weight-loss journey, he weighed over 500 pounds and by 2025, he 300 pounds. In December 2024, he told his wife, Bunnie XO on her podcast, Dumb Blonde, that he spoke about his weight loss publicly in order "to be honest about my struggles with it with people." Jelly Roll described being at his heaviest was a "never-ending sadness," for him.
He also stated that it felt like he "was a prisoner to my own body," and that "every decision I made in life had to be based on my weight." In an interview with Extra, Jelly revealed the benefits of his weight loss and said:
“I'm a better father. I'm more present with my children. You should see it, dude. I mean, I'm coaching my son's basketball team this year ... I just feel physically better, and I feel like I can physically do things.”
