The Bengali entertainment industry has been left heartbroken after news broke that actor, Rahul Arunoday Banerjee has passed away. His sudden death occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026. One of the main reasons why his demise is so shocking is that Rahul was only 43 years old at the time of his death. For those unaware, Rahul is survived by his estranged wife, Priyanka Sarkar and their son, Sohoj. However, did you know that while he was alive, Rahul was rumoured to be in relationships with two prominent Bengali actresses, Sandipta Sen and Rooqma Ray?
Rahul and Priyanka Sarkar tied the knot in 2010. After nearly seven years of marriage,the duo filed for divorce in 2017. However, they did not separate legally and decided to reconcile just a few years ago, in 2023, for the sake of their son, Sohoj, whom they had welcomed on December 9, 2013. While Rahul and Priyanka were separated, the late actor was linked to a few Bengali actresses, including Sandipta Sen and Rooqma Ray.
Well, when Rahul Arunoday Banerjee was alive, he was known to be quite easygoing about openly talking about his relationships. This is why, when Rahul was asked questions about his rumoured relationships in an old interview with Anandabazar, the actor did not shy away from sharing his thoughts. He reportedly sparked romance rumours with Sandipta after becoming friends with her following his separation from Priyanka.
To add fuel to the fire, Rahul once wished Sandipta on her birthday, writing, "You are the address of my whole heart...Happy birthday, Sandipta.” Later, owing to his on-screen chemistry with Rooqma, Rahul was asked during the interview if Rooqma had found a way into his heart. Vehemently denying the claims, Rahul said at the time:
“What is that! Why would I go into a relationship with Rooqma? I haven't even broken up.”
Despite his answer, Rahul was then asked if Sandipa had broken up with him because of his love for Rooqma. As you might have guessed, Rahul denied the claim. He said that he never had a special relationship with Sandipta in the first place, nor did he ever imagine his future with her. Loosely translated from Bengali, his words were:
"We never admitted to having a special relationship with Sandipta. It's not like we saw a future with her. If you think about it that way, it would be different. Because of Rooqma, my relationship with Sandipta broke; it's like dreaming of something impossible.”
When asked whether Rahul and Rooqma had visited the hills together, the actor reiterated that she is his friend. He said that if he had to go on a trip with her, he would definitely take a group of friends with him. Rahul added that he had nothing to hide.
In a 2018 interview with The Times of India, Priyanka opened up about her thoughts on Rahul's link-ups. She confessed that she was depressed and had gone through an extremely tough time. Priyanka said that she had always given 100% in her relationship with Rahul, both before and after marriage. However, when things did not go as she had hoped, she thought it would be best to walk out of the marriage. Another reason for this is that she was sinking into depression, and that was not good for her son, Sohoj. She decided to live for Sahoj and did not care whether Rahul was dating Sandipta or anyone else, for that matter. In her words:
“I really don't know whether Rahul was dating Sandipta then or whether he is still dating her. Neither do I want to know. When I took the decision not staying together, it was a culmination of many things and not one thing in particular. And later, I came to know of many such names in Rahul's life but whether they are true or not, I have no clue. If it hurts my self respect, there's no point staying in a relationship. Later, I realised Rahul and I were not compatible.”
