Country music legend, Alan Jackson and his wife, Denise Jackson, are making headlines as they became grandparents to their daughter, Mattie’s baby number two. They are already grandparents to a granddaughter named Charlie and grandsons named Wesley and Jack. They are parents to three daughters, Mattie, Alexandra and Dani. They have been married since 1979. Over the years, Alan and Denise have had a fair share of ups and downs in their relationship.
But do you know the much-in-love couple separated for four months soon after Christmas 1997? Yes, you read it right. After the reconciliation, Denise got another shock when she discovered Alan’s infidelity. However, she chose forgiveness and gave her marriage a try. Now, if you are interested in knowing about their 40-plus-year love story, we’ve got you covered.
Alan met his ladylove, Denise, while attending Newnan High School in their hometown, Newnan, Georgia. According to a report by Today, the duo began dating when the country music legend was 18, and Denise was 16. During their time in high school, Denise was a top student and an athlete, and Alan sang in a barbershop quartet.
Alan and Denise tied the knot on December 15, 1979. At the time, Denise was a teenager. However, their marriage was not perfect. Speaking about the same, Denise once told People that when she got married to Alan, everything looked like a fairytale. But with time, she understood that it was not a perfect marriage. She was quoted:
"I was a teenager when I got married and had this almost Cinderella complex: 'I’m going to marry him, and he’s so confident and competent and he’s going to take care of me forever and life is going to be one grand fairytale.' But the reality is our marriage isn’t perfect."
During the first few years of their marriage, Alan did odd jobs, including selling cars and building houses, while Denise worked as a flight attendant. At the time, Alan also pursued his music career. In the early '80s, Denise pitched Alan to the famous country singer, Glen Campbell, while working at the airport. Shortly after Denise and Glen’s meeting, Alan recorded a demo and got a chance at a songwriting contract with Campbell’s publishing company. In 1985, the couple moved to Nashville. After five years, the couple became parents to their first child, a daughter named Mattie.
Later, Alan Jackson and Denise welcomed their second and third daughter, Alexandra and Dani, in 1993 and 1997. Following the birth of their youngest daughter, Dani, Alan told Denise that he was unhappy in their marriage. After the 1997 Christmas, they parted ways. The couple stayed apart for four months. However, the decision to split was not sudden. Explaining the reason behind it, Denise told Christian Broadcasting Network:
"I think Alan got to a point after 18 years where he thought, 'We both deserve so much more than this, and we haven't been able to fix it yet, and I don't think it's fixable.' So that was really the turning point where he said, 'Enough is enough. I'm leaving.'"
During the same conversation, Alan shared that the separation was hard for her and thus chose to invest her time and energy into her spiritual journey. After four months of separation, the couple reconciled after the country music star came by to visit their children and asked her on a date. While they were making amends, Denise learned about Alan’s infidelity. However, she chose to forgive him and give their marriage another chance. In her book, It’s All About Him: Finding the Love of My Life, Denise opened up about his infidelities. But initially, she was nervous about the book. Speaking to People, Denise said:
"He knew why I wanted to write the book and that it was important for me to admit that he had been unfaithful, because one of the main messages of the book is about forgiveness and how healing can come when we work through problems and infidelities."
