The morning of October 15, 2026, began as any normal day. However, by the afternoon, Silver Rail Elementary's grounds were covered in blood. Things took a turn when a shooter entered the premises and opened fire on the people present in the school, including children.
The shooting left multiple people injured and traumatized while also claiming the lives of three children and a teacher. However, before the number could have climbed, a bystander "heroically intervened" and stopped the shooter. The news was confirmed by Tima Kotek, who shared that a "community member" took down the active shooter during a press conference held by the City of Bend.
Oregon Governor Tima Kotek revealed that the bystander "heroically intervened to stop further loss of life." She further addressed the bystander directly and admitted that his actions carry a heavy emotional burden. Tima also added that their thoughts were with him as well, as taking down a person could weigh heavily on anyone's conscience. Tima was quoted as saying:
"Your actions carry a heavy emotional burden, and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well."
Who was the shooter at Oregon elementary school?
The shooter who turned a normal Thursday afternoon into a nightmare for children and adults alike was described as a 16-year-old Bend resident. The identity of the shooter was revealed by the Chief of the Bend Police Department, Mike Krantz. However, when asked at the press conference if the shooter attended the school or knew anyone at the school, authorities declined to confirm.
During the press conference, Mike Krantz confirmed that the shooter was dead. He revealed that the suspect was shot by the community member. He added that the bystander had seen him enter the school premises and pursued him. He was quoted as saying:
"The suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him."
Talking about what happened at Oregon elementary school, Mike Krantz revealed that the Deschutes County dispatch received a call from a victim in a car who was shot at the Silver Rail Elementary. The call came at 12:59 PM, and in the minutes that followed, the Bend Police Department received "dozens" of calls reporting the shooting.
Mile Krantz revealed that the shooter "forced" his way into the school by "shooting at locked doors." However, he could not confirm how far into the school the shooter went. Authorities arrived at the scene at 1:02 PM and immediately located five injured people, including the suspect. Each succumbed to their injuries.
The victims included a teacher and three students. The students are reported to be 5, 8, and 11 years old, respectively. Apart from the fatalities, a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher sustained critical injuries and were transported to the local hospital, St. Charles Bend. Two law enforcement officials told the Associated Press that the death toll was preliminary and could increase.
