Hugh Jackman's relationship with Sutton Foster keeps returning to the headlines for the many questions surrounding their controversial pasts. The Hollywood star and the Broadway actress have been at the centre of an infidelity buzz since their romance became public. It now looks like their alleged pasts have snuck up on the couple, and they may not be moving forward with a wedding just yet.
Recent reports suggest that their rumored plans to tie the knot have hit a major snag, and it may be linked to the X-Men star's high-profile divorce from his third wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, 70. Here's what we know about the alleged situation.
How Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster's romance became public
Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster have reportedly known each other since 2003, but it wasn't until they worked together on the Broadway revival of The Music Man in 2022 that their friendship reportedly grew much closer. The production originally commenced in 2019 but got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Their on-stage chemistry as ‘Harold Hill’ (Jackman) and ‘Marian Paroo' (Foster) in the musical immediately drew attention.
At the time, both stars were married to other partners. Jackman was married to his third wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, while Foster was married to popular screenwriter Ted Griffin. For decades, Jackman and Furness were the definition of a stable marriage, having been together for 27 years and still looking the happiest whenever they appeared in public. On the other hand, Foster was also in a decade-long marriage with the Ocean's Eleven screenwriter. However, by the end of 2024, both Jackman and Foster separated from their spouses and soon started getting seen together in public.
Fast forward to January 2025: Jackman, 57, and Foster, 50, were seen holding hands during a dinner date in Santa Monica. They started getting seen together frequently, holding hands, getting cosy with each other, and casually walking through the streets of Los Angeles. After months of speculation about a blooming romance, the duo took a trip together in September 2025, unofficially confirming that they were more than friends.

Nearly a month later, the couple hard-launched the relationship with a red-carpet debut during AFI Fest's premiere of Jackman's film, Song Sung Blue. The actress-singer beamed in photos from the event, holding hands with her new man. According to reports, the Broadway star's divorce finalisation was still pending when she started seeing Jackman.
Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster's engagement rumours
Earlier this year, the buzz was rife that Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster were secretly engaged. Reports claimed that the Logan star had proposed to the Anything Goes actress during a New Year's getaway in Costa Rica. Sources also mentioned that the couple was already discussing plans for an intimate wedding in New York City, possibly followed by a honeymoon in Europe. While Foster's divorce has yet to be finalised, insiders say that the wedding preparations continue behind the scenes. A source told New Idea:
“[Hugh’s] told his team to keep a big window open for him and Sutton to tie the knot and have a honeymoon tour of Europe, where they can see his mum. Hugh and Sutton are full of excitement about all the next steps that they can finally take. They spent so long feeling like they couldn’t live out loud, but now that they are finally a public couple, things are moving very quickly.”
Why were the marriage plans paused?
While earlier reports mentioned that wedding plans were on the way, new reports suggest that the plans are now facing delays. According to insiders, the biggest hurdle to Jackman and Foster's wedding may be the actor's children with his ex-wife. Before dating Foster, the actor had been married to Furness for 27 years, during which they welcomed two children, Oscar, 25, and Ava, 20.
A close source who wished to remain anonymous revealed that Oscar and Ava are strongly against their father's new relationship and remain deeply protective of their mother. Speaking to the National Enquirer, the insider said that the alleged wedding plans have been stressful for Jackman as he wants the best for his kids. The insider said:
“They’re incredibly protective of their mother… he wants to be respectful of that. While it’s wonderful to be at the stage where Hugh and Sutton are actively discussing wedding planning, it’s also stressful. They have to balance their wishes with what’s best for their respective children.”
Meanwhile, Sutton Foster also has a daughter, Emily, whom she adopted with her estranged husband. While there are no confirmed reports about Foster and Emily's relationship after she started dating Jackman, it seems that family conflict has played a major role in straining their wedding plans with Foster's impending divorce.
Controversies surrounding Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster's relationship
Critics have often questioned Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster since the news of their alleged affair broke. Their October 2025 red carpet debut showed zero hesitation, while their Costa Rica vacation photos featured them embracing under sunset skies. Both have demonstrated resilience through their career challenges, divorce complications, and intense media scrutiny for their unconventional love. After Deborra-Lee Furness hinted at “betrayal” in their nearly three-decade marriage, many fans sided with her, suspecting infidelity. Neither Jackman nor Foster has publicly addressed the allegations.
