The latest episode follows major fallout in King’s Landing and the Riverlands, as ‘Rhaenyra’s’ Small Council struggles after the Gold Cloak murders and ‘Ormund Hightower’ pushes to tighten his hold on the war.
As expected, another character has died in Episode 6, and it has now raised a lot of questions about what might happen next. Keep reading to know more!
In the latest episode of House of the Dragon, ‘Criston Cole,’ played by Fabien Frankel, was killed during battle. ‘Cole’ and his outnumbered forces encountered ‘Roddy the Ruin,’ portrayed by Tommy Flanagan, and ‘Oscar Tully,’ played by Archie Barnes, in the Riverlands. He was struck by three arrows, one of which hit him in the face.
At the time of his death, he was still carrying a keepsake from ‘Alicent,’ played by Olivia Cooke, tied to his sword. This happened right after ‘Gwayne Hightower,’ played by Freddie Fox, left him once he realized ‘Cole’ planned to die fighting. Ahead of the season premiere, Fabien told PEOPLE that ‘Cole’ had come to accept a grim fate, after essentially offering himself up to die in Season 2.
Frankel noted that the character’s arc shifted throughout the season, explaining that ‘Cole’ had briefly found purpose again only for it to be taken away. He also expressed hope that viewers might start to see ‘Cole’ differently in Season 3. While acknowledging it would be difficult to call the character a good man, Frankel said he approached ‘Cole’ as a human being, even a flawed one, because seeing him otherwise wouldn’t help his performance.
Fabien added that he understood the audience’s reaction and wasn’t surprised by it, and said he was curious to see if opinions about the character would change as Season 3 continued into Season 4.
The episode also appeared to kill off another long-running character. Steve Toussaint has played ‘Lord Corlys Velaryon,’ also known as the ‘Sea Snake,’ since the series began. In the closing moments, ‘Corlys’ and his men were ambushed by soldiers serving Ormund Hightower. Although his death wasn’t explicitly confirmed, he was attacked and choked by one of the soldiers and fell to the ground before the screen cut to black, leaving his fate unresolved.
The episode starts with ‘Criston Cole’ surrounded in the Riverlands by ‘Oscar Tully’ and ‘Roderick Dustin,’ aka ‘Roddy the Ruin.’ In the books, this is the Butcher’s Ball. ‘Cole’ tries to surrender and asks for a duel before being shot by ‘Red Robb Rivers.’
The show changes it, and ‘Alysanne Blackwood,’ or ‘Black Aly,’ kills him. She’s a Riverlands archer for ‘Rhaenyra’ in the books. Before dying, ‘Cole’ looks at a handkerchief ‘Alicent’ gave him in Season 2. It reminded him of the few good times in King’s Landing, and he seems to have cared for her.
‘Gwayne Hightower’ isn’t there because he’d been questioning ‘Cole.’ After ‘Cole’ said he wanted to die in battle, ‘Gwayne’ left for Tumbleton to join ‘Daeron’ and ‘Ormund.’ ‘Borros Baratheon,’ the Lord of Storm’s End, is still absent after backing the Greens in Season 1. His house not fighting has frustrated both sides. ‘Ormund’ is targeted by fake ‘Baratheon’ envoys.
‘Alicent’ told ‘Rhaenyra’ about ‘Ormund’s’ sensitivity to smell, so assassins arrive covered in mud. 'Gwayne' spots the imposter. The envoys also blame a ‘Vulture King’ uprising for keeping ‘Borros’ home. In the books, several outlaws use that name, and ‘Borros’ is busy with the third one. ‘Larys’ and ‘Tyland’ argue over ‘Aegon’s’ escape. ‘Larys’ wants ‘Essos,’ ‘Tyland’ wants ‘Casterly Rock.’ On the other hand, ‘Aegon’ tests them and picks ‘Larys’ for honesty.
‘Alyn’ and ‘Baela’ kiss. The latter is ‘Daemon’ and ‘Laena’s’ daughter. 'Baela's' mother was born to ‘Corlys’ and ‘Rhaenys’, so ‘Alyn’ is her uncle. ‘Daemon’ kills a Hightower loyalist who’s been murdering gold cloaks and writing to ‘Ormund’ about riots in King’s Landing. ‘Rhaenyra’ keeps ‘Ulf’ from pubs because dragonriders threaten ‘Targaryen’ authority. ‘Ulf’ has wealth but misses normal life. ‘Hugh’ rescues his wife in Tumbleton, but she rejects him for abandoning her.
The Iron Throne cuts ‘Rhaenyra’ as it did ‘Viserys.'The former then plans to use ‘Alicent’ as bait to lure ‘Aemond’ from ‘Harrenhal.’ ‘Alicent’ agrees to protect ‘Helaena.’ This isn’t in the books. ‘Alicent’ mentions ‘Helaena’s’ visions. ‘Targaryens’ like ‘Aegon’ had prophetic dreams, and ‘Daenys’ foresaw the Doom of Valyria and led her family to Dragonstone. Finally, ‘Corlys’ is ambushed by ‘Ormund’s’ men led by ‘Ser Jon Roxton’ as he prepares to return as Hand.
