The first three episodes focus on the two parallel lives that are about to collide. On one side is ‘Alice Black,’ played by Emmy Rossum. She’s new to the FBI but not new to pain. She transferred over after leaving the NYPD, where an abusive relationship with a fellow cop pushed her out. Now she’s stuck answering the bureau’s public tip line in New York.
While other agents dismiss the calls, ‘Alice’ takes every single one seriously. That habit is what pulls her into the case. Her old NYPD partner, ‘Danny Kelly,’ asks her to look at an overdose. At first it looks routine. But ‘Alice’ notices details that don’t fit. The victim is a judge, and the cause of death isn’t drugs at all. It mirrors another death from a year earlier, a drug dealer who was also staged to look like an OD. That’s when ‘Alice’ realizes she might be looking at a pattern, not isolated incidents.
Meanwhile, we meet ‘Catherine’. She’s played by Lola Petticrew, and she never gives her real name. She moves through the city in masks and wigs, usually a red wig when she’s out in public. Her first kill in the series is that judge, the son of a wealthy New York family. She gets into his brownstone on Halloween by pretending to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters.
Once inside, she tortures and kills him. ‘Catherine’ isn’t killing randomly. Her targets are powerful men who were part of the system that abused her when she was a trafficking victim. The show makes it clear she’s working down a list. After the judge, she sets her sights on ‘Oliver Charles,’ a lawyer. To stay invisible, she infiltrates a shelter for abused women, steals another resident’s identity, and builds a fake life just to get close to her next mark.
The storytelling cuts between ‘Alice’s’ bleak, procedural world and ‘Catherine’s’ chaotic, electric one. ‘Alice’ is trying to hold herself together while digging through trauma. ‘Catherine’ is driven by revenge and seems to find a strange sense of purpose in it. By the end of episode 3, ‘Alice’ has enough to convince her superiors this isn’t an OD case, but the bureau still doesn’t see how big it is. ‘Catherine’ is already three steps ahead, setting up her next identity and next target.
Episode 3 ends with both women moving closer without knowing how close they are. The biggest reveal is that ‘Catherine’ and ‘Alice’ are mirror images. Both survived violence from men in power. Both left institutions that failed them. ‘Alice’ left the NYPD after her abuse, and ‘Catherine’ escaped trafficking.
The show keeps drawing parallels so we start to question who the hero is. ‘Alice’ works within the law but is ignored and sidelined. ‘Catherine’ works outside the law but is getting results against men the system protected. ‘Catherine’s’ method also becomes clearer. She doesn’t just kill. She studies her targets, learns their routines, and uses their privilege against them.
Stealing identities from vulnerable women at the shelter shows how far she’ll go - she’s willing to hurt other victims to reach the abusers. That moral gray area is the point. The series isn’t asking us to root for murder. It’s asking why someone would feel this is the only option. For ‘Alice,’ the ending of episode 3 is a turning point. She’s no longer just answering phones. She’s now officially connected to a serial case, and her past as a detective is dragging her back in.
‘Alice’s’ mentor at the FBI, along with Scoot McNairy’s ‘Danny,’ will likely pull her deeper. But ‘Alice’ also carries her own trauma, and the show hints that facing ‘Catherine’ will force her to face herself. The final shots set up a collision course. ‘Catherine’ is preparing for ‘Oliver Charles.’ ‘Alice’ has flagged the pattern but doesn’t have a name or face yet.
With five episodes left, the tension is that ‘Alice’ is hunting a ghost who is also hunting the same kind of men ‘Alice’s’ past is tied to. The first three episodes establish the chessboard. ‘Catherine’ is active, methodical, and personal in her revenge. ‘Alice’ is reactive but sharp, and she’s the only one taking the calls seriously. The ending is not a twist yet. It’s the moment both women are locked in.
