He gained widespread attention for his role in the 1994 popular television serial Shanti. He was 28 when he portrayed the 60-year-old ‘Kamesh Mahadevan’ in Shanti. He later appeared in many poignant roles in films such as Hey Ram, Munnabhai M.B.B.S., Bajirao Mastani, and many others.
Yatin Karyekar’s professional life saw many heights, but his personal life was not a bed of roses. He was married to his co-star, Iravati Harshe, who played his daughter in Shanti. However, the duo parted ways within five years. Despite being so much in love, the couple couldn’t save their marriage as it was falling apart. The divorce left Yatin devastated. Yatin Karyekar and Iravati Harshe lived together before getting married
Iravati Harshe was Yatin Karyekar’s junior in college. While she was rehearsing for a play, Yatin noticed her for the first time. She asked Yatin for his views on their play, and he said it was horrible. Iravati took Yatin’s help to prepare the play and presented it within three days.
During the rehearsals, Yatin could feel Iravati being attracted towards her. After the play, she called him one day and told him that she was attracted towards him. Iravati and Yatin were 17 years apart in age. On the other hand, Yatin had a broken engagement before meeting Iravati, and he was sceptical of starting a relationship with her. But he told her he was ready to live with her if that suited her, and eventually they lived together for three years.
During their relationship, Iravati’s grandfather fell sick, and he asked her and Yatin to get married. Though they took it lightly and told him that they would think about it. But when they reached back home after meeting him, they got the news of his death. Out of respect for him, Yatin and Iravati got married in 1996, since it was his last wish.
What led to Yatin Karyekar and Iravati Harshe’s divorce
After two years of a relationship and three years of living in, Yatin and Iravati began their marital journey. However, things changed suddenly after marriage. After five years of marriage, in 2001, Yatin and Iravati got divorced. In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Yatin revealed that their marriage broke because Iravati ‘drifted away’.
Speaking about the same, he revealed that since he had long shooting schedules and was away for many days, Iravati ‘drifted away’ from the marriage. When the host quipped about the same, Yatin simply said he could not divulge more, as he had to respect her. In the same conversation, Yatin revealed that since their divorce, he and Iravati have not been in touch and have not spoken.
During the difficult period before their divorce, Yatin turned to alcohol as his falling marriage devastated him. He struggled with addiction and used to drink daily. His emotions took a toll on him in such a way that he used to sleep for just two hours. It started affecting his health. However, soon he quit drinking after the divorce.
