The search for the missing US student, James “Weston” Higginbotham, has gained significant traction over the past few days. Reportedly, he had gone on a family vacation in Japan. And now, in a tragic piece of news, it has been revealed that the search has ended in tragedy after he was found dead in Kyoto.
According to reports, Weston Higginbotham was a 20-year-old junior biosystems engineering major at Auburn University, hailing from Alabama. He had reportedly gone missing during a family vacation in Japan, and his search had drawn international attention for nearly a week. Weston had been visiting Japan with his parents and younger brother, celebrating his brother's high school graduation. While they were staying in the Kyoto area, he separated from his family on May 29, 2026.

However, before Weston Higginbotham disappeared, it is believed that he had an altercation with his mother over her overuse of ChatGPT. As a naturalist, he had told his mother that the use of artificial intelligence consumes a lot of water. Later, while speaking with NBC News, Weston's mother admitted:
“We try never to use it, and I totally agree with him. It was just a dumb, dumb argument to have.”

Authorities had later confirmed that Weston Higginbotham was last seen in the Yamashina area on the outskirts of Kyoto. According to reports, surveillance footage showed him arriving at Yamashina Station in Kyoto at around 8:15 pm on the day he disappeared. Soon after this, his mobile phone reportedly lost network connectivity. This is important because Weston's family had been tracking his location via a phone app, which showed him moving around the city before the signal was turned off. According to his family, this was unusual behaviour on the part of the 20-year-old.

Weston Higginbotham was reported missing in the early hours of May 2026, as per CNN. Following this, Japanese authorities launched a large-scale search operation which involved not only police teams and volunteers, but also helicopters and K9 units. Despite the teams thoroughly searching the forests and mountain trails in the Yamashina area, they were unable to locate Weston during the initial stages of the operation. To make matters worse, the search had become more complicated due to the difficult terrain and severe weather conditions. This included heavy rain associated with a regional storm system.

Still, with the official search continuing, Weston's parents, Nancy and Keith Higginbotham, did not sit back as they travelled through the search area and asked for assistance from the public. According to reports, information about the missing student had been further circulated by volunteers, local residents, and supporters in both Japan and the United States. Reportedly, Auburn University, where Weston studied, had expressed their sympathy and concern for the family during the search.

Weston's mother, Nancy, took to her Facebook on June 6, 2026, to confirm that her son “was found deceased by a volunteer search-and-rescue group in a mountainous area outside of Kyoto.” While announcing the tragic news, she expressed her gratitude to “the countless people across the United States, Japan, and around the world who shared Weston's story, prayed for our family, offered encouragement, and helped in the search efforts.” It is worth noting that as of now, neither Nancy nor the authorities have announced Weston's cause of death, and investigations are still underway. Additionally, no foul play has been announced by officials as of June 6, 2026. A part of Nancy's statement can be read as:
"The grief we feel is impossible to put into words. We are forever grateful for the time we had with our sweet, precious Weston, but cannot begin to understand what life without him will be like…Thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and support. We will need them now more than ever. We will always love you, Weston."
Team BollywoodShaadis offers our prayers for Weston Higginbotham's family as they navigate this difficult time.
