Salim Kumar Passes Away At 56, Here's What Happened To The National Award-Winning Actor

Malayalam actor, Salim Kumar tragically passed away at 56. He was admitted to Amrita Hospital in Ernakulam. He took his last breath while undergoing treatment in the hospital. He is survived by his wife, Sunitha and sons, Chandu and Aromal. According to multiple reports, Salim was admitted to the ICU and was on ventilator support. On the morning of June 6, 2026, the National Award-winning actor complained of having chest discomfort, following which he was taken to the hospital.

What caused Salim Kumar's death at 56?

According to a medical bulletin issued by the hospital, Salim Kumar suffered cardiac arrest. According to reports, the Malayalam actor had a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease on maintenance haemodialysis and coronary artery disease. Earlier, he also had a liver transplant. The medical bulletin can be read as:

"He was initiated on ventilator support, antibiotics, dialysis and other life-saving measures. During the hospital stay, he suffered a cardiac arrest and, despite maximum possible resuscitative measures, could not be revived."

Salim Kumar’s untimely demise has left his family and the Malayalam industry mourning. According to a report by Kerala Kaumudi, Salim’s mortal remains will be taken to Paravur Town Hall in Ernakulam at 9 a.m. on June 7, 2026, where fans can pay their final respects. The funeral is scheduled to be held on the evening of June 7, 2026. Actor and politician, Vivek Gopan penned an emotional note for Salim. The loosely translated note of Vivek can be read as:

"Salim Kumar was the laughter and the tears of Malayalam cinema. An artist who made people laugh, made them think, and spoke the truths of life has today bid farewell to us. Through the simplicity of his comedy and the depth of his serious roles, he earned an immortal place in the hearts of Malayalis. The loss of this great artist is an irreparable one for Malayalam cinema. I pray that his soul attains eternal peace in the presence of God. May God grant strength to his grieving family and loved ones to endure this loss. Salim Kumar will live on forever in our memories."

More about Salim Kumar

Salim Kumar was born on October 9, 1969, in North Paravur in Ernakulam. He was the youngest son of his parents. He completed his schooling at Government Lower Primary School and Government Boys High School in North Paravur. He graduated from Maharaja's College, Ernakulam. He made his acting debut in 1996 with the film, Ishtamanu Nooru Vattam. He rose to fame with the 2000 blockbuster film, Thenkasipattanam.

Salim began his acting career as a comedian, but later he earned widespread acclaim for portraying nuanced and emotionally charged characters. Over a career spanning nearly three decades, the Malayalam actor appeared in close to 300 films. Some of his notable works include Kalyanaraman, CID Moosa, Mayavi, Meesha Madhavan, Thilakkam, Pulival Kalyanam, Chathikkatha Chanthu, and Chess. Over the years, Salim won many accolades for his versatility. He won the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor for his performance in Lal Jose's Achanurangatha Veedu.

Later, he received the National Film Award for Best Actor and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor in 2010 for his acclaimed performance in Adaminte Makan Abu. In 2021, Salim completed 25 years of togetherness with his wife, Sunitha. On September 14, 2021, Salim took to his Facebook account and penned a note. The loosely translated note of Salim can be read as:

"By the blessings of the Almighty, this moment has completed 25 years today. Our gratitude to all those who have collaborated with us will always be in our hearts. With love and respect, Salim Kumar & Sunitha."
