Former NFL All-Pro pass rusher, Aldon Smith untimely passed away on June 13, 2026, in Northern California. He was just 36 years old at the time of his death. His former team, the San Francisco 49ers confirmed his sudden passing through an official statement. Local reports noted that he was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital in San Jose. Aldon Smith's sudden demise left his friends, family and NFL acquaintances heartbroken. His fans expressed their disbelief at the sudden happening, mourning his loss. Amid the outpouring of grief, his career and off-field controversies have been revisited.
Aldon Smith was an exceptionally talented NFL player who played as an outside linebacker and defensive end. His college football days with the Missouri Tigers foreshadowed a promising NFL career. Following his impressive run with the Tigers, he was named the 2010 Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year, and also got the opportunity to go pro with the 49ers. Aldon was selected 7th overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2011 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he recorded 14 sacks without even starting a single game. He was also the first runner-up for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The next year, Aldon set a 49ers single-season record with 19.5 sacks, earning First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honours and helping San Francisco's entry into the Super Bowl XLVII. He also became the fastest player in NFL history to reach 30 career sacks, accomplishing the feat in just 27 games. After his release by the 49ers, Aldon Smith briefly played for the Oakland Raiders (2015), missed four consecutive seasons due to suspensions, and later played for the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks before retiring in 2023. Although the linebacker has a memorable NFL career, he could've reached even greater heights if his life hadn't been marked by intense off-field drama.

Aldon Smith's off-field controversies included substance abuse, DUI-related arrests, domestic violence incidents, and weapons charges. In January 2012, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Miami Beach, Florida. The charges were later reduced to reckless driving. Aldon's second DUI-related charges came in September 2013. He was arrested for not just drunk driving but also marijuana possession. Under the influence, he crashed his truck into a tree in San Jose, California. Following the incident, he voluntarily entered an inpatient rehabilitation facility.

In between his two DUI Incidents, in September 2013, Aldon got involved in a weapons episode. During a party, hosted at his residence, he tried to stop two people from fighting and got hurt in the process. The incident had a drastic outcome as he sustained minor stab wounds, and two others were shot, which later led to Smith being charged with three felony counts of possessing illegal assault weapons. The felony charges were later reduced to misdemeanours. The next year, in April 2014, Aldon was arrested again, this time for lying about bomb possession.

In 2018, he was booked on charges of domestic violence due to assaulting his then-fiancée, Shawna McKnight. It led to him being dropped by the Raiders.
