Former NFL All-Pro pass rusher, Aldon Smith untimely passed away on June 13, 2026, in Northern California. He was just 36 years old at the time of his death. His former team, the San Francisco 49ers confirmed the sudden and tragic passing in a team statement. Local reports noted that he was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital in San Jose. Aldon Smith's sudden passing left his friends, family and NFL acquaintances heartbroken.

Who is Shawna McKnight, Aldon Smith's fiancée?

Shawna McKnight was the last publicly known love interest of Aldon Smith. After their messy split, he stayed away from the spotlight and didn't share details of his personal life. It is not known whether he was single or committed to someone at the time of his death. Talking about Shawna, she was frequently in the news during her relationship with Aldon, and it was mostly for the wrong reasons, including a domestic violence row. Not much is known about her except for her profession. She is a San Francisco-based personal trainer.

Shawna McKnight and Aldon Smith reportedly started dating in October 2017. They had a whirlwind romance with a hasty engagement, quick fallout, and an eventual breakup. Within just four months of dating, the duo felt like they had found the one. They were so much in love that Aldon proposed to her with a ring on February 14, 2018. He opted for the happy occasion of Valentine's Day to share his love with the world. He proposed to Shawna during a dinner date at Restaurant Gary Danko in San Francisco. The proposal reportedly took place right next to the table of NFL legend, Joe Montana.

Aldon Smith and Shawna McKnight split after his domestic violence row

Less than a month after the engagement, Aldon and Shawna's relationship went downhill when he was accused of domestic violence. At that time, police were called to a San Francisco residence on March 3, 2018. According to the officers, they responded to an emergency services call regarding a domestic violence incident at a residence on Bush Street. Dispatch records also included the alleged details of the assault. According to it, Aldon bit the victim on the wrist and threw her across the room before escaping through a window. He reportedly fled the scene when police sought him in connection with the offence.

The buzz around the issue heightened when  Shawna McKnight publicly confirmed she was the victim of Aldon's assault. Amid the police investigation, the Oakland Raiders cut ties with Aldon. The NFL team released him from his contract on March 5, 2018. Just a day later, he turned himself in and was booked on several charges. Over two weeks later, on March 23, 2018, Alden Smith was arrested again for his contact with his then-fiancée, Shawna, which was an act of violating the protective order issued by the authorities.

Aldon was sentenced to 90 days in jail, three years of probation, and 52 weeks of domestic violence counselling. Shortly after, he got into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre and focused on bringing his life back on track. Amid the second-time arrest, Shawna McKnight told TMZ Sports that she could no longer be with him and announced their split. She stated:

"Unfortunately through these circumstances Aldon and I are no longer together. Although it's with a heavy heart I truly wish him the best and pray he gets the help he needs. I will always have love for him but at this point I'm simply the victim in this ongoing case."
