Michael Byrne was born in London in 1943 to a single mother, Helen Byrne. He completed his schooling at Anna Freud Nursery and Burgess Hill School in Hampstead. He also took training at the Central School of Speech and Drama, supported by the Freud Institute. His first big career break came in 1963, when Michael was given minor roles in Laurence Olivier's National Theatre Company at the Old Vic theatre.
Michael received international recognition in the 1970s. He appeared in many popular World War II movies, including The Eagle Has Landed, A Bridge Too Far and Force 10 from Navarone.
