Recently, the controversy intensified after their eldest son, Maddox Chivan Jolie, filed legal documents to officially drop "Pitt" from his last name. Amid the buzz, fans have been digging up Brad and Angelina's past, with his alleged cheating scandal with Marion Cotillard resurfacing.

Who is Marion Cotillard? Why was she linked to Brad Pitt?

Marion Cotillard is an Academy Award-winning French actress, singer, and environmental activist. Born in September 1975, she is 50 years old as of June 2026. Marion's breakout role was that of legendary singer, Edith Piaf in the 2007 biopic, La Vie en Rose (La Mome). Her performance in the movie brought her global fame and made her the first actor to win an Oscar for a French-language project. Marion seemed destined for acting, as she hailed from an artistic household, according to Britannica. Her father, Jean-Claude Cotillard, was an actor and director, and her mother, Niseema Theillaud, was an actress.

However, at the age of 16, she felt she needed to work on diverse projects to build a strong acting portfolio and thus moved to Paris. According to a 2016 Page Six report, Angelina Jolie allegedly suspected Brad Pitt was fooling around with his co-star on the set of Allied. Following that, she reportedly hired a private investigator to follow him. As per the reports, the detective caught Brad partying like a carefree, single guy and interacting inappropriately with Marion Cotillard, which supposedly served as the final straw of his relationship with Angelina. Rumour has it that Brad (who was in his 50s at that time) was going through a midlife crisis, and Angelina was frustrated with him. To momentarily forget about the issues, he allegedly ignored his marital and parental status and indulged in unfaithfulness.

According to reports from Us Weekly and People Magazine, Brad is "deeply hurt," "devastated," and "upset" to learn that his children no longer want to be associated with his name. Sources noted that the constant public reminders that he has lost his children are extremely difficult for him to face. While the actor has not made any public statements himself, the reports from close sources included details about his severe anguish over the growing estrangement with his children. Insiders reveal that Brad's biggest fear is being permanently cut off from his kids.

A few years before the name-dropping controversy, the former couple's adopted son, Pax Jolie-Pitt took to his social media to criticise Brad, alleging that he made his family's life miserable. As per Pax's post on his private IG account, his father is an "awful human being" who made their lives a living hell. He stated:

"You have no consideration or empathy toward your four youngest children who tremble in fear when in your presence. You will never understand the damage you have done to my family because you're incapable of doing so."
