Even two years after Matthew Perry's death, the reality behind his sudden death continues to haunt his family and friends. New revelations emerge every day, and fans who knew him as 'Chandler' still find it hard to believe how the actor said goodbye to the world. Meanwhile, the case is once again in the headlines because the actor's longtime assistant was recently sentenced to 41 months in prison. For those unaware, the court found him guilty in the actor's ketamine overdose case, which caused his untimely death in October 2023.
Matthew Perry's assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, had worked closely with the actor for years. In fact, he was considered one of his most trusted aides. According to court documents and multiple reports, he had served as Matthew's live-in assistant for nearly 25 years. However, authorities found that he was heavily involved in helping Matthew get Ketamine during his final months. In fact, court records revealed that despite no formal medical training, he kept injecting Matthew with doses of Ketamine multiple times.

At the same time, they found that even on the day of Matthew's death, Kenneth gave him ketamine. In turn, during his sentencing, US District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett of Los Angeles' federal court called out Kenneth's conduct. She reportedly told, "You were privy to his struggle with addiction. You were reckless". According to Entertainment Weekly, the sentencing marks the end of the federal investigation of the actor's death.

At the same time, Matthew Perry's family also submitted emotional victim impact statements before the 60-year-old was sentenced. Matthew's mother, Suzanne Morrison, reportedly mentioned that she and the actor trusted Kenneth completely. On the other hand, his family accused the 60-year-old of failing to protect the actor despite knowing about his addiction. While his sister accused him of leaving the actor "in a hot tub to die."

According to prosecutors, Kenneth Iwamasa continued to inject Matthew with Ketamine even after he was having a negative reaction to the drug. Court documents stated that Kenneth had previously seen the actor "freeze up" and lose the ability to speak afterward. In fact, he also allegedly found the actor unconscious twice at different times before his death. Still, prosecutors claimed that he continued to help Matthew get ketamine through doctors, middlemen, and illegal suppliers.

A report from The New York Times revealed that coded language was allegedly used to arrange the deliveries. They also claimed that the actor spent thousands of dollars to get the drugs during the final months leading to his death. Kenneth's legal team stated that he did not want to harm the actor and that he was not forced to get it. Still, he "could not say no" to him. However, the actor's stepfather, Keith, believed that the assistant enjoyed the lifestyle Matthee provided him and failed to help him, despite seeing things become serious.

Matthew Perry died on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54. He was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his LA home. Later, his autopsy revealed that he had died due to the acute effects of Ketamine. At the same time, some other factors that contributed to it were drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine.
Investigators eventually found a whole black-market ketamine network with doctors, intermediaries, dealers, and the actor's assistant. According to investigators, the actor initially received legal Ketamine infusion therapy for depression and anxiety. But eventually he turned to get higher illegal doses. Other conduct in the case includes Jasveen Sangha, doctors Salvador Plasencia and Mark Chavez, and a middleman, Erik Fleming.
