Jennette McCurdy, the New York Times bestselling author, director, and former actress, recently shared disturbing personal details about her life. The 33-year-old rose to fame as 'Sam Puckett' in the hit Nickelodeon series, iCarly (2007–2012) and its spinoff, Sam & Cat (2013–2014). Jennette, who entertained the masses through her on-screen roles and thrived professionally, has led a distraught private life. Beyond the glitz and glamour of the movies, Jennette had a traumatic childhood and a toxic teenage years, the latter being due to her unhealthy relationship with a much older man.

During a January 7, 2025, appearance on Call Her Daddy podcast, Jennette McCurdy discussed a toxic, "addictive" relationship she had as a teenager with an older man she met while working. Jennette was approximately 18 years old, while the unnamed man was in his mid-30s. She described the age gap as "creepy," noting that he would pressure her to like the same movies and music he did, creating a power imbalance. The former actress pretended to want whatever he wanted to keep her much-older ex-boyfriend happy and contented. Recalling the incident, she said:
"I was most likely 18. He would show me movies that he thought I would like. Like, Dazed and Confused, which I did not like but I pretended to like. He would play me music that I did not like, but I pretended to like."
The man didn't just coerce Jennette into liking similar stuff as him; he also allegedly cheated on her. Recalling that he had "red flags all over", Jennette said the 30-something man was in another long-term, live-in relationship while dating her. He would frequently use phrases like "I can't believe how smart you are" or call her "mature" to manipulate her into getting physically intimate with him. Jennette also recalled him coming to her apartment while being drunk and how "exhausting" it was to deal with him. She used her personal experience to pen her debut novel, Half His Age, which is scheduled for release on January 20, 2026. Jennette mentioned:
"It was just exhausting. I remember he came over drunk one night to my apartment. At this point I've moved out of my mom's, I'm very new...also red flags all over."

Jennette's ex also wanted to move into her apartment and live with her when her extremely ill mother was staying at her place. At that time, not knowing what else to do, Jennette got a hotel room for the former couple. She couldn't have him living under the same roof as her mother, as their unusual relationship would never receive her mother's approval. Now that Jennette McCurdy looks back on her relationship with the older man, she realises that everything in it went according to his whims, leaving her "powerless." She called him a "loser" for behaving that way with a teenager half his age. She stated:
"I can't have my dying mother and my boyfriend that she doesn't know about and would never approve of staying at my apartment at the same time," McCurdy said. "We have a dilemma on our hands. He uses the 'You can't meet my needs' thing a lot. I go, 'OK, I'll get us a hotel room.'"

Jennette McCurdy has detailed a significant past relationship with an older man whom she met through work. While she typically uses a pseudonym in her writing, public records and media reports suggest he might be the iCarly script manager, Paul R. Glaser. There isn't any official statement from the former actress or Paul, which might confirm him as the man in his 30s who preyed upon a teen. However, the publicly available details and timeline of Paul and Jennette's relationship hint at the possibility. Notably, she met Paul while working on the set of Nickelodeon's iCarly, where she acted, and he served as the show's script supervisor. Their ages at that time also match Jennette's Call Her Daddy podcast revelations.
Paul R. Glaser is an American television professional who gained significant public attention following the release of Jennette McCurdy's 2022 memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died, in which she detailed a controversial and emotionally complex relationship with him. In the professional sphere, as a script manager on iCarly, Glaser was responsible for coordinating script revisions and ensuring continuity across episodes. His production credits include iCarly (2007–2012), Victorious (2010–2013), and a few others.
