Unlike Mamata Banerjee, Nihar has always remained associated with local politicians in Rampurhat. He is not as famous as Mamata, but has gained significant traction recently after his daughter died.
Nihar Mukherjee is the maternal cousin of Didi and comes from a family of farmers
Nihar is Mamata's maternal cousin and is the son of Aniil Mukherjee. He is the younger brother of Mamata's mom, Gayatri Devi. A 2013 Telegraph India report suggested that Nihar came from a farming family and lived in Kusumba village in Birbhum. Back then, he was 46 and was also contesting a seat in the Kusumba gram panchayat.
Nihar Mukherjee is married to Pampa Mukherjee, who is also involved in local politics. She had taken part in the Rampurhat-I panchayat samiti while Nihar was also contesting for the gram panchayat elections. The couple's political activities put the family squarely within the local Trinamool Party in Birbhum.
In 2023, Nihar Mukherjee became very famous after his daughter Bristy's name appeared on a list of school employees. Their appointments were terminated after a Calcutta High Court gave an order related to the West Bengal school recruitment controversy.
Nihar, once speaking about his relationship with Mamata, had shared that the former chief minister is his didi. In his words, "But I did not take undue advantage of my relation with her. The party chose me and my wife as candidates.”
Bristy's name was seen as a Group C employee back at a school in Birbhum. Her name appeared on the list that drew considerable attention because she was Mamata's maternal cousin. The opposition had raised many questions about the connection.
Back then, Nihar had defended Bristy, saying she had resigned from her job because she was facing health issues and could not continue working. Nihar had also alleged that Bristy had worked only for a very short time and had not received any salary. The statements he made amid the huge controversy gained prominence, even as thousands of appointments were made in the school recruitment process.
For those who do not know, Nihar has been associated with the Trinamool Congress for many years. According to reports, he is a local RTMC leader and also the party's Rampurhat-I block president. He has been widely recognised as Mamata's maternal cousin.
He had earlier made it clear that his family relationship with Mamata Banerjee did not mean he had easy political access. Nihar had cleared the air by stating that when Bristy got appointed in a government school, his connections with Didi were very limited.
Nihar may be going through a very tough time in his life, as his 28-year-old daughter, Bristy, died by suicide on September 1, 2026. She was found hanging at her home in Kusumba village. The cops recovered her body, and it has been taken for a post-mortem. An investigation related to the circumstances leading to the death has been launched.
The circumstances related to Nihar's daughter, Bristy's death remain mysterious. It is not clear whether there has been an act of murder or not, but Nihar has been in the news.
