Former Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's niece has passed away at the age of 28. According to reports, Brishti Mukherjee was found dead at her Birbhum home. She is the daughter of Mamata's cousin, Nihar Mukherjee, and now reports have gone rife that she died amid an ongoing divorce battle.
The news of Brishti Mukherjee's death has come as a shock to the country, with many wondering what led to the 28-year-old's death. According to reports, Mamata Banerjee's niece Brishti Mukherjee took her own life. The 28-year-old was found hanging on the first floor of her home in Kusumba village, in West Bengal's Birbhum district, at around 9 AM on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The news of her suicide has left everyone shocked and wondering what could have led Brishti to take such a drastic step.
Amid the news of her death, it is being reported that Brishti Mukherjee was accused of securing a job through a recruitment scam. As per reports, she was facing allegations of corruption regarding the recruitment of school teachers and Group-C staff. She allegedly had secured the job through illegal means or irregularities. Reports have further revealed that a Calcutta High Court directive stated that her name reportedly appeared on the list of cancelled appointments published by the School Service Commission (WBSSC) at serial number 608.
However, she had resigned from the position shortly after joining, citing personal reasons. Nonetheless, that was not all. Reports have also revealed that Brishti and her husband had recently filed for divorce. Sources said a divorce proceeding between Brishti and her husband had been going on for several months. Her in-laws are reportedly from Ayash village. Brishti Mukherjee also had a 12-year-old child. The police are also investigating whether her current situation is linked to the matter.

According to her family members, she had been suffering from depression for the past few years and was undergoing treatment. The Rampurhat police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death by suicide. The body has been sent to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination. While there have been no comments or statements from Mamata Banerjee or Brishti Mukherjee's family, her sudden death has raised several questions. According to PTI, a police officer shared a statement on her death and said:
"The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. An investigation is underway. The circumstances leading to the death will be established after the post-mortem and other procedural inquiries."
