"I pushed to get married early because I felt inadequate and insecure and like I wasn't enough and that if I was married to her, I would somehow be a better person and more important. And that put her under an unnecessary amount of pressure and strain. She has innocence; she's a very beautiful person. She's also incredibly driven and worked really, really hard. Here's me taking total responsibility for all the mistakes I made in that marriage. I felt like I was inadequate and not enough on my own."

The comedian shared that although Katy is a big celebrity, she was not strange and was just a normal person. Russell mentioned that during their marriage, Katy was not involved in any wrong or suspicious activity. For those unaware, Russell and Katy’s divorce was finalised in 2012. He was quoted as saying:

"What can I tell you is, when I was married to Katy Perry, she's like a—not entirely normal, because she's an extraordinary, massive star—but she's not weird or off key. And wasn't involved in anything nefarious, as far as I could tell. The reasons that a marriage didn't work are the normal human reasons marriages don't work, and I have nothing but respect for her. I obviously disagree with her political views."
