Alex Zanardi's death has left the sporting world in grief. The former Formula 1 driver and Paralympic star died at the age of 59. His family confirmed his death on May 1, 2026. While Alex's colleagues, fans, and Italian dignitaries are mourning his death, know all about his final days and cause of death.

What caused Alex Zanardi's death?

Alex Zanardi's family confirmed his death. But they did not reveal the exact medical cause of his death. However, reports suggest that he passed away nearly 6 years after his horrific handbike crash in 2020. The incident had visibly changed his life forever. At that time, Alex was competing in a charity handcycling event in Tuscany. But he eventually lost control of his handbike and collided with an oncoming truck. In turn, he suffered several facial and other injuries.

The former Paralympic champion had to undergo multiple surgeries to recover. In turn, he spent several months in intensive care. Despite surviving, Alex mostly stayed out of the public eye to focus on rehabilitation. Later, he returned home in late 2021 and continued private treatment. Still, the former F1 Driver had to deal with the long-term effects of the accident. His wife, Daniela Manni, once mentioned that he was receiving neurological and physical recovery. But nothing much was revealed. Sharing more about the final days of Alex, his family said:

"It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Alessandro Zanardi, which occurred suddenly yesterday evening, May 1. Alex passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all those who are showing their support at this time and ask that their grief and privacy be respected during this period of mourning."

Alex Zanardi received tributes from across the world

After the news of Alex Zanardi's death went viral, several dignitaries from the motorsport and Paralympic communities shared their tributes to him. The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile praised Alex's journey to success. At the same time, Formula 1 President Stefano Domenicali honored Alex's strength and optimism. On the other hand, Georgia Meloni gave an emotional tribute. She especially called Alex "a great champion and an extraordinary man."

More about Alex Zanardi's impressive career 

Alex Zanardi rose to fame in Formula 1 in the early '90s, racing for multiple teams. It included the Jordan Grand Prix, Lotus F1 Team, and Williams Racing. Although he had a stable career, he eventually found major success in the American CART series. In turn, Alex won several championships in 1997 and 1998. However, he suffered a major injury in 2001 in Germany, where Alex lost both his legs. But just when everyone thought his career was over, he made a comeback in motorsport in adapted touring cars. Eventually, he moved into handcycling and won four gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Paralympics. At the same time, he won 10 world titles.
