On the other hand, Vijay’s marriage with Sangeetha Sornalingam has hit a rough patch after 26 years of togetherness. Recently, Sangeetha has filed for a divorce from her husband, Vijay. Recently, the actor-turned-politician, Vijay Thalapathy, was seen attending a Women’s Meet. During the event, Vijay finally broke his silence on the ongoing divorce drama. Addressing the crowd, the Jana Nayagan actor told them not to worry about the recent problems surrounding him. The South sensation assured his fans that he would take care of himself and his family. He was quoted as saying:

"Don’t worry about the recent problems surrounding me. Those issues are not worth your time. I will take care of them and myself. What hurts me the most is seeing you feel sad or stressed because of my problems."

Vijay Thalapathy's wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, files for divorce from her husband after 26 years of marriage

On February 27, 2026, the nation was shocked by the news of Thalapathy Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam’s separation. According to a report by The Indian Express, Sangeetha has filed for divorce from Vijay at the Chengalpattu Family Court. Her petition was filed under Section (1)(a), (b), (d) and Sections 36 & 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954. The next hearing of the case is scheduled for April 20, 2026.

The shocking part of Sangeetha’s divorce plea was that she discovered an alleged affair involving Vijay and a female actress in April 2021. She claimed that despite repeated assurances from Vijay, he continued the illicit relationship. In the petition, she mentioned that her husband kept travelling abroad with the actress. The petition can be read as:

"The respondent continued travelling abroad and attending public events with the said actress. The actress regularly posted photographs of these outings on social media. The respondent neither denied nor objected to these posts, thereby tacitly endorsing them. These posts widely circulated, causing repeated humiliation to the petitioner and the children."

As per the latest reports of Gulte and India Today, Sangeetha Sornalingam has filed a new petition against her husband, Vijay Thalapathy. In the fresh petition, the star wife has sought the right to stay in their matrimonial home or to be provided with an alternate accommodation. According to the petition, the actor-turned-politician made it clear that his wife won’t be permitted to reside in the matrimonial home if she chooses to approach the court for legal separation. In this regard, Sangeetha allegedly demanded a fair and reasonable permanent alimony. Earlier, a report by Tamil Filmibeat claimed that Vijay has proposed an alimony of Rs. 250 crore to his wife.

It was an interfaith marriage as Vijay is a Christian and his wife, Sangeetha, is a Hindu. Vijay and Sangeetha welcomed their first child, a son named Jason Sanjay, on August 26, 2000. Five years later, on September 9, 2005, the duo completed their family by welcoming a daughter named Divya Saasha.
