Tollywood icon, Vijay Sethupathi is garnering a lot of limelight at the moment, due to his phenomenal performance in the recently released film, Merry Christmas. The actor is paired opposite to the gorgeous Bollywood beauty, Katrina Kaif in a gripping thriller, suspense film. The film has already been getting a lot of positive responses, and audiences have exceptionally loved the superb performances delivered by the two actors. Moreover, some others are also surprised at the exceptional chemistry between Vijay and Katrina that has reflected, since they have been paired for the first time ever.
In an interaction with Brut, Katrina Kaif recalled the first time that the filmmaker, Sriram Raghavan narrated her the script of Merry Christmas and remarked it as one of the most unbelievable moments in her life. Moreover, she added how upon learning that Vijay Sethupathi was the lead opposite to her, she wasn’t able to recognise him by name, and had to Google search it in order to know him. In her words:
“I had seen a film called 96, which I loved and stars Vijay and Trisha. But somehow, I didn’t make the connection when sir told me, ‘this is the person who I think I am going to cast in this role — Vijay Sethupathi’. I didn’t make this initial connection that this is this actor. So the first thing I did was that I went on Google to make sure like refresh my memory. And there was this picture of him with such a big white beard, there are a lot of these pictures of him on the internet. White beard and white hair. So I was like ‘wow that’s interesting.’ I thought that looked really really good. I actually kind of liked that look to be honest.”

Moving further in the interview, it was Vijay Sethupathi who narrated the time when he learnt being paired opposite to Katrina Kaif. The actor confessed being doubtful at first, since he was sure that he wouldn’t look good with her on-screen. Further, he revealed a series of shocked reactions which he received from many other people, who thought that he might have a guest appearance in the film. In his words:
“I was shocked because everybody had that question. When I first told them that I am doing a Sriram Raghavan sir’s film, they said, “okay, very good, superb!” And (then I said) I am doing it with Katrina Kaif, so they said, ‘Is yours a guest role? Is it a heroine centric film?’. Everybody knows Katrina. It was a shock for me also. Like how is it going to be in the film, everybody’s asking, ‘how is this pair on screen?’. The same way I also have that fear and the doubt.”
Previously, in an interview with News Minute, Vijay Sethupathi, for the first time ever, addressed a frequent gossip about him being dropped at the last minute from Aamir Khan’s 2022-film, Laal Singh Chaddha. The role was finally taken up by Naga Chaitanya. The conjecture even claimed that the decision was taken keeping in mind Vijay’s weight issues. However, dismissing all such speculations, the actor revealed that on the contrary, Aamir Khan courteously narrated him the script and he even agreed to do so. However, the reason due to which the things didn’t materialise at the end was due to Vijay's clash of schedules with other planned projects of his.

After reigning Tollywood with some of the most impeccable performances in films such as Super Deluxe, 96, Uppena, Vikram Vedha, Master And Vikram among others, it was in 2023, when Vijay Sethupathi broadened his horizons and ventured in mainstream Hindi cinema. Kickstarting his debut, he joined the OTT world with Farzi, starring Shahid Kapoor. The actor then locked horns with Shah Rukh Khan in the hit film, Jawan, where his performance was lauded immensely. And now with Merry Christmas, the actor has once again proven his bar above the others.
