More about the Best Actor drama controversy involving Timothée Chalamet

Despite all the romance at the Oscars 2026, Timothée Chalamet's campaign did not end without controversy. Earlier in the awards season, his remarks about opera and ballet sparked online criticism. But during a discussion with Variety, the actor compared the challenges of keeping cinema relevant to those of other traditional art forms. Some critics interpreted his comments as dismissive toward classical performing arts. Sharing his views, he said:

"I don't want to be working in ballet or opera, or you know, things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive,' even though it's like, no one cares about this anymore".

Several popular personalities, such as Misty Copeland, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more, called out his comments. The stir also became a subject of humor during the ceremony itself, when host Conan O'Brien joked about heightened "security" due to potential backlash from opera and ballet communities. Eventually, Michael B Jordan took home the honour.
