Acclaimed director and actor, Rob Reiner, 78, and his ten years younger wife, Michele Singer Reiner's December 14, 2025 death shook everyone to the core. Their murder through stabbing was investigated as a homicide, and their son, Nick Reiner, was identified as the prime suspect; however, he pleaded not guilty in court. Months after the horrendous incident, Rob and Michele still remain in the hearts of their close pals, including their industry acquaintances, such as Billy Crystal. Recently, on March 15, 2026, Billy utilised the Oscars platform to pay a heartfelt tribute to his dear friend, Rob, and his wife.

Billy Crystal paid an emotional tribute to Rob Reiner

At the 98th Academy Awards, Billy Crystal delivered a deeply emotional tribute to his longtime friend, director Rob Reiner, and Rob's wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The tribute took place during the ceremony's In Memoriam segment, roughly three months after the couple was brutally killed in their Los Angeles home. Billy, who first met Rob in 1975 on the set of All in the Family, praised his evolution from a comedic actor to a master storyteller whose films "will last a lifetime" He stated:

"My friends, Rob's movies will last for lifetimes because they were about what makes us laugh and cry and what we aspire to be far better in his eyes, far kinder, far funnier and far more human."

Billy also gave a poignant reference to Rob Reiner's 1987 classic, The Princess Bride, saying, "Buddy, what fun we had storming the castle." Towards the end of his speech, Billy also mentioned his purpose of sharing the tribute for Rob. He said he wanted the millions of people who found enjoyment and happiness in Rob's movies to know that it was exactly what the actor had wished for throughout his career. His exact words were:

"And to the millions who have enjoyed his films all these years, I want you to know here and around the world, how many times Rob told me that it meant everything to him, that his work meant something to you. And for us who had the privilege of working with and knowing him, and loving him, all we can say is, 'Buddy, what fun we had storming the castle.'"

Billy Crystal also recalled Michele Reiner's legacy

Billy Crystal also acknowledged Rob's wife, Michele's legacy as a gifted photographer and a fierce advocate for social justice. He noted that her energy was the driving force behind her and Rob's joint fight for marriage equality in the United States, and the untimely loss of such nice and kind individuals was a setback to society. Paying a heartfelt tribute to the late Michele, Billy said:

"A gifted photographer, she not only produced films with Rob, but it was her energy that had them working tirelessly to fight social injustice in the country that they both loved...Rob and Michele Reiner became the driving force in the landmark decision for marriage equality across the United States. And their loss is immeasurable."
