Who is tiger Altai, who killed the young man at the Yorkshire Zoo?
In the statement from the zoo, it was revealed that the tiger, who is involved in the recent incident of killing the man, wouldn't be euthanized following the tragedy. It was also revealed that Altai is now 'safe and well', following the incident. For the unversed, Altai is an endangered Amur tiger, and the species is considered to be the largest big cat species in the world.
Speaking of Altai, he was born at Dyreparken Zoo in Norway and is 3 years old. Altai was bought by Yorkshire Zoo from Norway. Altai traveled 1,100 miles as part of the European Endangered Species Program (EEP) to join YWP’s resident tigress Tschuna. According to reports, his former keeper described Altai as 'nice and calm' and as a 'beautiful, huge cat and very calm and receptive'.
According to the reports, on the day Altai came to the zoo, he was really calm, and then came out of his crate after the Section Head of Carnivores, Bex Brown, tempted him with a piece of meat. Director of Animals, Charlotte MacDonald, said at the time that Altai is a 'beautiful' big cat. On the other hand, his previous keeper revealed that Altai loves his 'training, eating, and playing with water'. Amur Tigers are also known as Siberian Tigers, and if the reports are to be believed, their average weight is 160-190 kg.
The tiger attack victim was 'not in reality', and was waiting for the tiger with open arms
Recently, eyewitnesses Anthony Hunt and his girlfriend Scarlet Hogan revealed to The Telegraph that a woman, who came with two children to the zoo, tried to pull the man back, but he overpowered her and jumped into the enclosure.
According to them, the man started praying to the tiger while bowing down to him, and up until the attack, 'he was in a trance, not in reality at all', as shared by the witnesses. They also revealed that the man had his arms wide open, as if he was waiting for Altai to attack. To quote the eyewitnesses:
"The man started praying to the tiger, bowing down to it – the tiger looked a bit confused. Up until he got attacked, it was like he was in a trance, not in reality at all. He had his arms wide open, ready for the tiger to attack him. It was quite bad. We just stood there, frozen... the last thing we saw was the tiger’s jaw on his neck."
