While Nina had a relationship with Ian Somerhalder, Paul went on to date Phoebe Tonkin. Phoebe had a supporting role in the series, and she was seen as 'Hayley Marshall'. Speaking of Phoebe's relationship to Paul Wesley, the couple originally met in 2012, while shooting for The Vampire Diaries. Paul and Phoebe dated for four years from 2013 to 2017. The couple's relationship was the kind that is like having romantic links with your best friend. The same was revealed by Phoebe to Elle. While in a relationship with Paul, Phoebe expressed her happiness during an interview with Elle and said she was in a happy phase of her life and that it was nice to have someone to share everything with. Phoebe said:

However, after four years of dating, Phoebe and Paul parted ways. While the actual cause of the same had never been revealed, several sources claimed that the duo's relationship ran its course. The breakup reportedly was a mutual one, and they remained good friends after that. Phoebe also opened up about her break-up in 2018.
Speaking to Elle, she accepted that she had gone through a break-up and, given that she had a project to make her directorial debut with, it turned out to be the perfect opportunity. Phoebe could be quoted as saying:
