For those unaware, in the film, Matt portrays the role of the ancient hero, 'King Odysseus.' Now, as the buzz surrounding Matt's performance in Christopher Nolan's latest offering continues to grow, people have also become curious about his personal life, especially his marriage to Luciana Damon.
Matt Damon opens up about the secret to his 20-year marriage
Ahead of the release of his new film, The Odyssey, Matt Damon sat down for an interview with People. During the conversation, he opened up about his romance with his wife, Luciana Damon. While he admitted that he does not really like giving relationship advice to others, when it comes to his own relationship, it is built on a solid foundation. Revealing the secret to his marriage with Luciana, which has lasted nearly 20 years, he said:
"Boy, I've always loathed to give any advice because I feel everybody's different, and everybody's relationship is different. There’s a lot of love and respect underneath the relationship, and a lot of trust. It’s built on a very sturdy foundation. We continue to grow and evolve as people, and so that foundation’s really everything.”
According to Matt, his partnership with his wife is “the greatest thing” in his life. The couple met for the first time back in April 2003 while Matt was shooting the movie, Stuck on You. They tied the knot two years later in December 2005.
Together, Matt and Luciana share four daughters, Alexia, Isabella, Gia, and Stella. During a December 2025 interview with the same outlet, Matt had shared that having family dinner every night was a very important part of their routine. He was quoted as saying:
"We have family dinner every night, and that’s non-negotiable, and it’s always been that way. One of my daughters said, 'Well, family dinner, last night we didn’t talk.' And we realized, 'Oh my gosh, you’re right.' We sat down for dinner, and you can get lost in that routine a little bit and not appreciate why you established the routine in the first place. That’s the kind of family mindfulness we’re all working on."
It is worth noting that while Matt and Luciana are husband and wife, the duo have also collaborated professionally. For those wondering, Luciana is a partner at Matt and Ben Affleck’s production company Artist’s Equity. Most recently, she worked with Matt while producing his 2024 film, The Instigators, and his 2026 crime thriller, The Rip. Luciana has also produced Ben’s upcoming film, Animals.
Matt revealed that it's been a while since he and Luciana blended their personal and professional lives. The actor shared that she has been a part of that since they have known each other. For instance, she reads everything that he’s doing and looks at cuts of movies. Matt confessed that he has relied on her notes for 23 years. He added:
“While I was doing The Odyssey, she was producing the movie that Ben was directing, Animals, and so they have their own work-life and creative, professional relationship. We have one all together at the company, but they went off and did this movie while I was away, and that’s great to see.”
Matt Damon had credited his wife for pulling him out of depression
Many might not be aware, but Matt Damon had once admitted to his struggles with depression. He slipped into a difficult phase when one of his films did not work as well as he had hoped at the time. However, Luciana did not let go of his hand and pulled him out of depression. Matt said, “I remember my wife pulling me up because I fell into depression. Luciana just said, ‘We’re here now.’”
