The Odyssey is all set to hit the theatres worldwide on July 17, 2026. Fans cannot keep calm to see the new offering by Christopher Nolan. For those unaware, the film stars actor Matt Damon in the role of ‘King Odysseus.’ Now, during a conversation with People about the movie, Matt Damon revealed the one thing that he will never do for any film again.

Matt Damon opens up about undergoing weight changes for The Odyssey

In The Odyssey, Matt Damon’s character can be seen being hunted by Cyclops and thrown into a forest full of bloodthirsty giants. During his recent interview, Matt Damon opened up about his experience while shooting for the film and revealed that he had to drop to 167 pounds to portray ‘King Odysseus’ in the adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem. Matt claimed that this was the same weight he was when he was in high school.

However, Matt shared that he was fine with losing the weight. Revealing something that he would never do for any film again, he said:

“I didn’t change it in an unhealthy way. I think if I had done the opposite and put weight on, that would have been dangerous, and it’s not something I’ll do anymore. I was happy to do it earlier in my life.”

In the film, ‘Odysseus’ appears as a tortured and complicated character. He will have to voyage for 20 years to return to his wife (Anne Hathaway) and son (Tom Cruise). To make it seem like his body was capable of undergoing the journey, Matt Damon has to give up on gluten, “among other things.” He said:

“It was more about just getting really, really physically fit, which just really involves changing your diet, just a whole lifestyle change. You have to just be very, very intentional about everything you’re putting in your body.”

According to Matt, he found the inspiration for the same thanks to the daily push made by everyone on The Odyssey’s set. He claimed that this was the hardest and most challenging movie that he has been a part of to date. In addition to him, all those who were involved in the making of the movie have completely maxed out and strained against what they thought was possible.

Noting how it was all or nothing while creating the film, Matt shared that it felt more like an “expedition than a movie.” He added, “And if you were cold and wet, you just turned, and you looked, and Chris was just as cold and just as wet and going through it.” Matt claimed that by the end of the week, people were running on fumes. He was quoted as saying:

“But that feeling of elation when we would get to the end of a week and we’d look around, and it was a real sense of pride like, ‘Okay, that’s another week.’ And I would go home like everyone else and just kind of sleep, get my rest and be ready for Monday. I loved every minute of it.”

Matt Damon’s daughter reviewed The Odyssey

During the same conversation, Matt Damon opened up about how the most important review of his upcoming film came straight from his home. Well, it was his daughter who saw The Odyssey and told Matt that she was proud of him, suggesting that she loved the movie. Matt noted that his daughter is not someone who is reverential towards his movies; instead, she “loves to give me shit.”

As per the actor, his daughter had never said anything like that before, as they joke around a lot. So when she said she was proud of him after watching the movie, Matt thought to himself, “I’m good. It was all worth it.”
