Christopher Nolan could be in for another blockbuster. The long-awaited adaptation of Homer's epic, The Odyssey, by the internationally revered filmmaker, had its premiere in London and, if the early responses are anything to go by, the film has left critics thoroughly impressed.

The much-awaited movie, starring Matt Damon as the lead protagonist, ‘Odysseus’, premiered on July 6, 2026, with a worldwide release scheduled for July 17, 2026. Critics who were able to attend the premiere have reacted positively, hailing Nolan's "crowning cinematic achievement."

Critics call The Odyssey a 'staggering achievement'

The first reviews are in, and they’re very positive. Many critics are calling the film one of Christopher Nolan’s best works, praising the balance of spectacle and emotion in the film. Popular film critic Simon Thompson also praised the film's craftsmanship, calling it "flawless filmmaking" and calling it Matt Damon's "career-best powerhouse performance." Another critic, Matt Neglia, from the Next Big Picture, wrote on X:

"A colossal achievement of scale, even by Nolan’s standards, its commitment to capturing as much as possible in-camera using new IMAX cameras is a staggering technical feat worthy of this sprawling yet intimate story of one man’s journey to return home, the burden and consequences of leadership, and the eternal struggle between mortals and gods."

Matt Damon and Robert Pattinson emerge as early standouts

While the film boasts one of the biggest ensemble casts in recent memory, critics appear particularly impressed with the work of Matt Damon and Robert Pattinson. Damon, who plays the Greek hero, 'Odysseus', has been widely praised for delivering what several reviewers described as a career-best performance. Pattinson, meanwhile, portrays 'Antinous', the manipulative suitor of 'Penelope', the queen of Ithaca, played by Anne Hathaway

Early viewers have also praised the performance of Spider-Man star Tom Holland, who plays 'Telemachus', the son of Odysseus. Critics have also praised Hathaway's portrayal of 'Penelope.' Film critic David Ehrlich mentioned that while it may not be Nolan's S-tier work, The Odyssey feels "surprisingly natural." He wrote on X:

"The Odyssey: a surprisingly natural (and less despairing) Oppenheimer follow-up about a man haunted by defying the gods & dooming civilization - this one fights to avenge his own hubris. IMAX obviously immense. Too clunky to be S-tier Nolan, but the last act rewards the journey."

Nolan's biggest work with IMAX yet

One of the film's biggest talking points is its unprecedented scale. The Odyssey is the first narrative feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras, with Nolan previously revealing that production consumed more than two million feet of film over a 91-day shoot.

Erik Davis from Rotten Tomatoes called The Odyssey an "absolute triumph and a crowning cinematic achievement from one of the great filmmakers of our time." The production received rave reviews for collaborating with IMAX, which contributed to the film's "breathtaking" action on such a massive scale. Speaking about the cast, the critic wrote:

"The cast is stacked, and somehow everyone still gets a chance to shine. Anne Hathaway is incredible, Matt Damon is excellent, and Tom Holland continues to prove he can do just about anything. But Robert Pattinson absolutely stole the show for me. ... Pattinson leans all the way into the character's villainy, and it results in one of my favorite performances of his. ... it's the must-see cinematic event of the summer -- and quite possibly the year."

Early fan reactions have mirrored the enthusiasm from critics. Viewers have praised the cinematic spectacle, writing on X that the film was "incredible," praising its performances and Nolan's handling of the supernatural.

More about The Odyssey

The Odyssey features a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo. And if the first reactions are any indication, Christopher Nolan's latest epic may become another Oscar entry for the filmmaker.

The Odyssey premieres worldwide on July 17, 2026. Are you excited for the movie?
