After seven years of bloodshed, chaos, dark humor, and brutal superhero satire, the final chapter of The Boys has now come to an end, finishing up with a record-breaking final season. Prime Video dropped its explosive final episode of Season 5 on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, and viewers will need some time to recover from the emotional wreck of the brutal finale.
With one final showdown between Billy Butcher and Homelander, there came several shocking deaths and emotional betrayals. The story, which began in Season 1 as Butcher's extremely personal mission to end the world's most dangerous and unforgiving supe, finally reached its climax inside the White House itself, where Homelander attempted to crown himself as the new god of America. But the explosive face-off brings with it some inevitable losses.
[Spoiler Alert for The Boys Season 5 Episode 8, Blood and Bone!]
The finale, titled Blood and Bone, wastes no time diving into all-out war. As Homelander addresses the nation live from the Oval Office, declaring himself superior to humanity and openly embracing his dictatorship over America, 'Butcher' (Karl Urban) and the rest of The Boys infiltrate the White House with unexpected help from 'Ashley Barrett' (Colby Minifie), who finally turns against Vought and frees them from a trap.
We see several major plots unfolding simultaneously. As 'Starlight' (Erin Moriarty) faces 'The Deep' (Chace Crawford), 'Hughie' (Jack Quaid) and 'Mother's Milk' (Laz Alonso) take on 'Oh-Father' (Daveed Diggs), whereas 'Kimiko' (Karen Fukuhara) and 'Butcher' join hands for the final takedown inside the Oval Office. Kimiko finally unlocks her powerful supe-neutralizing blast ability. The blast strips Homelander, Butcher, and Ryan of their powers.

For the first time in the entire series, Homelander is truly, completely stripped of his power, and he becomes fully human. That becomes the turning point of the episode, dramatically shifting the emotional tone. The once-unstoppable supe, now too ordinary, immediately breaks down, begging for mercy, that too, as the entire country witnesses the confrontation unfold live.
Yes, after years of hatred and revenge, Butcher finally gets his moment. Using his trademark crowbar, he keeps beating Homelander, every strike avenging his wife, 'Becca', and everything he lost because of him. Ultimately, the once-greatest supe dies a raw and humiliating death, his vulnerability exposed to the world. In this moment, 'Ryan' (Cameron Crovetti) also plays a vital role in Homelander's defeat. Not only does he refuse to side with his father, but he is the one who ultimately helps Butcher to hold Homelander down so Kimiko can depower him.
Homelander's death was not the only shocking part. A final heartbreaking twist follows his fall. After years of eyeing his revenge, Butcher cannot come to terms with the fact that the war is, in fact, over. With Homelander's death, Butcher becomes consumed by paranoia and grief once again, especially after the death of his beloved dog, Terror. Convinced another Homelander could eventually rise, he decides the only permanent solution is releasing the supe-killing virus worldwide.

The plan itself puts Butcher directly against Hughie and the rest of the gang. The true ending of The Boys comes in the emotion-heavy final confrontation between these two. Despite Hughie's desperate attempts to stop Butcher from committing genocide, arguing that killing every supe would make him no better than the monsters he hated, he fails to stop him. And after a brutal, emotionally charged fight, Hughie finally shoots Butcher.
To make things worse, Butcher appears to stop himself from releasing the virus at the last moment, but by then, it is already too late. As he again sees flashes of his younger brother, Lenny, in Hughie, the gunshot kills him before he can explain. The biggest tear-jerker was in these final moments, when Butcher refuses treatment and instead praises Hughie, for he still has "a good heart" after life tested him in unforgivable ways. The finale later confirms Butcher's death during an emotional funeral scene attended by Hughie, Starlight, Ryan, MM, and Kimiko.
After five seasons of loss, grief, and betrayal, Hughie and Starlight (aka Annie) finally get one of the few hopeful endings in the series. With the war now over, Hughie gets offered a major government role connected to superhuman affairs, but he turns it down. He instead opts for a quieter life with Annie. Their lives can finally begin.

The finale reveals that Starlight is pregnant, and the couple plans to name their child Robin, honoring Hughie’s first girlfriend, whose death started everything back in Season 1. While not directly under the government, the two continue working as a team and helping others. This one storyline gives the otherwise dark series a surprisingly emotional and peaceful conclusion.
Meanwhile, several major characters also receive their endings, though some remain unexplored. MM finally reconnects with his family and remarries his ex-wife, finding peace after years of trauma and obsession with Vought, while Kimiko quietly leaves for France, honoring Frenchie’s memory.
And the remaining members of Vought? Well, Ashley Barrett initially refuses to resign as president but is eventually voted out and later arrested by the FBI. 'Sister Sage' (Susan Heyward), on the other hand, is now powerless and becomes an ordinary person for the first time in her life, and this strangely becomes her freedom. Meanwhile, 'The Deep' meets a brutal end after Starlight throws him into the ocean, where sea creatures attack and kill him.
Although The Boys has officially ended, the franchise does not plan to slow down anytime soon. Prime Video is already moving forward with Vought Rising, a prequel series centered around 'Soldier Boy', played by Jensen Ackles. Another project, The Boys: Mexico, also remains in development.
For fans who have followed Butcher, Hughie, Homelander, and The Seven since 2019, The Boys finale marks a heavily emotional end to one of the wildest superhero satires ever shown on television.
