Prime Video's hit superhero drama, The Boys, is set to culminate with a grand ending. But before its release, the highly-awaited finale of the show is facing backlash. The criticism began after the makers announced a special theatrical release of the final before it hits the streaming platform. While some fans are excited to watch the explosive ending on the big screen, others are unhappy about it.
A major reason for the backlash to The Boys Season 5 is the limited availability of theatrical screenings. According to reports, the special 4DX screenings for The Boys Season 5 will be held only at select cinemas. In fact, it would be mainly across the United States. This update has left many international fans upset, especially because the show has built a massive global fanbase.

Several viewers took to social media to complain that the film's theatrical release was being promoted as a huge celebration for fans. But instead, only a small section of the audience would get to watch it in theatres. So, they argued that if Prime Video wanted to make the finale a global event, the screenings should have been available in more countries.

Another issue is that the makers are releasing the finale in 4DX format. It is an immersive format, with moving seats, vibrations, flashing lights, water sprays, and environmental effects designed to make the action-heavy sequences feel more realistic. But longtime viewers of the show believe it would not fit the show's tone. Since the series is already known for extreme violence, graphic gore, shocking deaths and emotionally intense moments, fans joked that watching the film in 4DX could be "too much" inside a theatre setting.

Another major concern related to the theatrical release of the show's finale concerns spoilers. Some fans argued that since the theatrical release would take place before the finale arrives on streaming platforms, this could be a chance for a spoiler reveal. They fear that important plot twists and character death could go viral before the streaming premiere.

Since the show's finale would trend on X, TikTok, Reddit and Instagram, many viewers believe that it would be impossible to avoid early reactions or spoilers. In turn, many fans have claimed they plan to completely avoid social media until they can stream the episode. It is a major concern because the last Episode 7, featured several shocking moments, like the death of 'Frenchie' during a conflict with 'Homelander' that shocked the audience.

The fifth season of The Boys marks the final chapter of show and continues the battle between 'Billy Butcher' and 'Homelander'. It shows 'Homelander' increasing his control over the United States, while the remaining members of the Boys struggle to survive amid the growing political chaos. Some reports said the finale would show 'Butcher' preparing for the one last battle, using powers related to Compound V.
On the other hand, characters such as 'Starlight', 'Kimiko', 'Ryan', and 'Soldier Boy' would play significant roles in the final confrontation. Meanwhile, the final could also set up future spin-offs related to the show. For those unaware, the final episode, Blood and Bone, will officially stream on Amazon Prime Video on May 20, 2026.
