Sydney Towle's three-year battle with rare cancer

Just a few weeks ago, Sydney was full of hope about her clinical trial as the last attempt to treat her terminal condition. But on August 4, 2026, her brother, Austin, announced on TikTok that she had entered hospice care. In his heartbreaking update, Austin Towle shared a photo of Sydney surrounded by family and close friends at her bedside.

Sydney was only 23 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer that affects the bile ducts. While shocked and heartbroken by the diagnosis, she chose to use it as her strength, sharing every step of her journey on social media and building a community of more than 1.1 million TikTok followers.

Accepting the inevitable, Sydney became a source of inspiration for millions of people worldwide facing their own battles with whatever update she could give. Viewers watched her navigate surgeries, chemotherapy, hospital stays, and experimental treatments.

During her treatment, Sydney underwent major surgery that removed a large portion of her liver, her gallbladder and nearby lymph nodes. Even after the operation, doctors found that cancer remained, leading her to continue chemotherapy and later enroll in an advanced immunotherapy clinical trial.

In April this year, surgeons removed part of one of her tumors so researchers could harvest immune cells for the TIL therapy. Despite scans later revealing new tumors in her lungs and further growth in her liver, Sydney remained determined to continue treatment.

Sydney’s journey has had many emotional moments, one of which was when she disclosed in May 2026 that an oncologist recommended she move to end-of-life care. In a powerful video taped from the hospital bed alongside her mother, she said, "We are not at the point where we're giving up." Sydney decided to move on to a different medical team for treatment and wrote on Instagram:

"My rope is not finished yet. I am tying more on with the love of my family and friends and we will move on. Continuing to advocate for myself and for others who aren’t able to. Continuing to find solutions that are outside of the box and that may not seem like the straight, or even right, path forward. Because you never know unless you try."

That determination also saw her walk the runway at Miami Swim Week in May 2026, when she modeled adaptive swimwear for cancer survivors just days after receiving the difficult prognosis.
