A source close to Sydney Sweeney told the National Enquirer that the actress was really upset about the intense backlash she received for her Novig ad campaign. The Euphoria star was merely putting on "a brave face" and broke down in tears behind closed doors. The source called Sydney "sensitive" and unable to fathom what she did wrong to become a target of a hate train. The insider was quoted as saying:
"Behind closed doors there have been plenty of tears. She is sensitive and can't understand why she's always a target."
The source also shared how the nude ad campaign criticism affected Sydney from a business perspective, calling it a "disaster." They said the 29-year-old The Housemaid star lost thousands of followers and even hit a new low in sales for her lingerie line, SYRN. The insider clarified that it wasn't Sydney Sweeney's intention to put female athletes or any woman down through her Novig commercial, and stated:
"Her ad was not putting women down. She wasn't in any way intending that, and she doesn't understand how the situation spiraled so much. She's lost tens of thousands of social media followers over this- it's a disaster from a business perspective."
Sydney Sweeney was allegedly under a lot of "pressure" due to her career and other reasons, and the criticism surrounding her nude advertisement only added to her woes. The insider defended the Christy actress by saying she wasn't the only one who tried to cash in on her physique. They went on to cite examples of Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez, who did it before Sydney, but didn't generate such harsh criticism. In their words:
"She's already under so much pressure. This is the last thing she needs...Many other women in Hollywood- including Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez- flaunt their figures for a paycheck. So it feels very unfair that Sydney's on the receiving end of so much hatred for it."

Sydney Sweeney recently appeared in a debatable, bare-bodied September 2026 advertisement for Novig. In the ad, she also performed a series of mock sports, including tennis, golf, baseball, and ice hockey. Netizens and athletes criticized the ad for allegedly promoting the sexualization of female sportspersons.
Following that, Sydney took to her Instagram Stories and shared a series of nude photos of athletes from ESPN's famous Body Issue magazine, including that of Serena Williams, Ronda Rousey, Sue Bird, Megan Rapinoe, Rob Gronkowski, and Jason Kelce. The public saw it as Sydney Sweeney's way of hitting back at the backlash.
Following that, Serena Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, slammed Sydney for comparing an entertainment advertisement to an athlete's tribute to her physique. Retired Olympic-winning Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmus and some other athletes also slammed Sydney for allegedly promoting the sexualization of female sportspersons through her ad.
Ariarne condemned Sydney's Novig ad featuring Sydney, saying, "I can't describe how infuriated I feel when I watch this." According to Ariarne, the ad undermined women who spent years building careers in sports with utmost dedication and hard work.
